grayed out wifi. presed recorded with light on for 45 mins powerd iphone off then back on wifi worked did not have to drain all the power, then i went in to wifi setting and put it on auto and pressed renew lease. fine at the mo

many thanks.. I used my iHair Dryer... as instructed by harps2299] to make my [now one of the kids- I jumped ship] iPhone works again. Contrary to the Senior tech supports suggestion that it is nothing to do with Apple hardware or software fault... I would say there is a design fault in the product..
I did inform a very nice chap at the Genius bar this week the whole story and perhaps to advise people how they can fix their iPhones when Apple turn their backs on them.
all very sad..

I had the same problem and after several attempts, I found the problem for my iphone 4s: An application is causing the wifi greyed.
I noticed that I lost the wifi by running some app (after using the hairdryer method, or freezer).
So I deleted the application (which was unstable in my opinion), did again the method hairdryer and restarted the phone.. Since the wifi is stable again. I even gained battery life.
In my view, there are several problems "wifi greyed." This solution worked for me.

I had the same problem and tried all suggested steps like Reseting my network settings and it still didn't work.
Then I tried to reboot by holding the menu and power buttons and...it worked.
Wifi is fine now.

I finally manage to bring my iPhone 4S to a local repair shop.
They're not cheap (it costs me ~$65), and apparently they're professional in their job (well, that comes with a price, doesn't it?..)
I'm not quite sure what exactly they're doing, but looking at how they use airgun, and dismantling the iPhone, most likely they're reflowing the wifi chip, as the solder got cold and didn't make a good contact between the chip and the board.
If you browse the internet, you'll find someone suggest to do reflow on the logic board or put in the oven for a certain amount of time.
At least I can keep my iPhone (with wifi functionality) a bit longer before upgrading to a newer generation smartphone.

Apple what are you doing !!
You bring an update on the market and we install this update and now we have a broken Iphone.
We have a lot of Apple devices in our home, because we all have confidence in your products, but now our confidence is a lot less after this.
At SAMSUNG, you can expect such things, but not by Apple.
I am very angry and disappointed that this problem, which is there for almost 2 years and but there is still no
good solution for it.
Our daughter is very upset because her expensive earn, Iphone does not working anymore, in the middle off her vacation.
APPLE DO SOMETHING WITH THIS PROBLEM, BECAUSE WE (IAPPLE USERS) DON'T EARN THIS !!!!!!

DO NOT use a hair dryer, freezer, or any other crazy fixes. If you have a hardware warranty, it will be voided.
And why complain about paying for a repair? Do you buy a car and expect repairs to be done for free? Nope.

No but if enough cars have a fault there would be a recall and if you have no warranty the hairdryer works perfect

Keyword being IF! IF you have a hardware warranty do not use a hair dryer or the freezer.
And I should've clarified, I meant complaining about repairs in general, not just for this particular issue. Recalls I understand but if you've had a phone for 2 years, of course there may need some repairs eventually. >.<

I'm with ios 6, but the problem with apple is that this bug is affecting several ios's versions!
I had this problem in ios 6.1.3 and i lost my wi-fi!
Anyone now how to handle this? a update of version doesn't solve...

Apple should have told you by email why your post was deleted, but it was probably because you made a comment about iOS 7, which has not been released to the public and thus cannot be disscused in a public forum. Every possible solution has been posted, most dozens of times, in this thread and others. So just by reading you can learn everything that is known about it.
Usually when something affects multiple versions it is a hardware failure. And you are correct, this problem has been reported with every version going back to 3.0 on the iPhone 3. As it is a hardware problem there is no software solution. "How many iPhone owners does it take to change a lightbulb?" "None; Apple will fix it is software. Just wait long enough."

As most people can't be bothered to read the 50 pages of posts, I'll summarise:
1. This is not a software problem. This is not an IOS problem, it's a hardware problem. It may have occurred after an upgrade, it may have occurred before an upgrade. Mine occured a long time after an upgrade.
2. Freezing it does seem to help for a short while (10-30 mins), after then it fails. I cannot recall a post where somebody has said it works permanently.
3. Heating with a hair dryer occassionally helps. Contrary to popular belief you are not reflowing the solder. My soldering iron melts solder ar around 240 degrees (depending on the mix), you can get other solder that melts at a lower temperature, but your hair dryer is not going to melt solder. Just think of the impact on your hair of a dryer that operated at that temperature. Where people say they have seen a hot air gun being used in a repair, thats to get the iPhone separated. I cannot recall a post where somebody has said it works permanently.
4. Resetting the phone in every possible way does not fix the problem. You can restore it, factory reset it, blah, blah, blah. It will not work. You may happen to get your wifi chip to work again for a while, but once it's gone, its gone.
5. Once your phone shows the symptoms of the button graying out, it will not work. Life is like that sometimes.
6. Apple does not care about you bleating. Its a large corporation and no matter what you say, it will make zero difference. Do not waste your breath, do not use capital letters, do not bother writing to them. They have made lots of money by not caring about you once their contractual obligations are gone. Why should they? For every person who goes over and buys a Samsung S4 (a better phone by the way), there are other people queuing up to buy an iPhone. Welcome to capitalism. The only way you will get Apple to listen is through legal remedy, if you think you have a case, then reach for your laywer. Fight them in the courts. Or buy a couple of percents of their stock and get yourself onto the board. That way you meet Tim Cook personally and tell him your problems. You don't like it, great, go elsewhere and vote with your wallet, works both ways, thats the beauty of the market. By the way, this is not just Apple, all organisations work like this.
