Q: Why is the Apple Mac Developer portal down, and for how long?

I cannot access the Mac Developer resources this morning.

With a company as advannced as Apple, I would expect them to be able to roll out web updates

seamlessly.

I don't like being out in the cold.

I want to download the Mavericks Beta.

    Apple Developer Website Update

    headershadow

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

Notice in the email they still say "we expect to have the developer website up again soon."

See how we didn't admit to a problem there? We wanted to title it "...Website Outage Update", but the legal team laughed.

Well, Well, at last we get at least some information. Between my observation and the current time...

Just to let you know, they are still there, BUT not for download by anyone

But honestly, it has me perplexed as to why in the ****, people always leave things to the last minute. I got the email telling me of my impending License/Subscription or what ever Apple want to call it was expiring 4 weeks before it was due. So what did i do, instead of waiting until the last day, i paid up , my money, and guess what ?? My Dev License ran out or would of gone south today, so me paying up way ahead of time, i had nothing to worry about in the next 389 days apart from the site going down, but as i said in a previous post, i have all the Documentation i need, and StackOverFlow for answers, because all people want to do in this Developer Forum, is complain about Apple and their site being down.

See... I sent the email about an hour ago informing Apple that the portal was down and now they responded.

Everyone should be thanking me for sending the email to alert them of the problem.

Had i NOT sent that email, they may have never known......

Apple only stated they would still be _in_ the store...they never promised anything more.

I swear I think 90% of people who sign up for the developer license never develop anything... except negative posts.

When people leave negative comments on your app, now you know why.

    Crticism and negativity abound.

When an anonymity is present, there are very few truly postive altruistic people in the world.

Agreed. Apple sends notices well ahead of time. Even renewing 2 weeks before expiration is cutting it close, esp. if you reside outside the US. No one should wait to re-up...

Nothing curious about that. This site has many times the amount of traffic as the developer site.

"Problem is, if it was a scheduled upgrade with associated down time, they would have issued a notice the dev community ahead of time."

True. It might have been nice if they said something a bit earlier about a security breach. Rebuilding a db, as large as theirs is not a small task. One wonders why they have to overhaul everything.

Of course I can help be a little skeptical and suggest that claiming the dog ate one's homework is a classic evasion.
