If you have no sound at all in any app including the music app, reboot your iPad.....

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

..... If you lost sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.

System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.

Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.

If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.

If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.

If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.

This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

If it's in warranty then take it to the local Apple retailer for resolution.

If your iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is Broken

Apple does not fix iDevices. Instead, they exchange yours for a refurbished or new replacement depending upon the age of your device and refurbished inventories. On rare occasions when there are no longer refurbished units for your older model, they may replace it with the next newer model.

You may take your device to an Apple retailer for help or you may call Customer Service and arrange to send your device to Apple:

Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.

To contact product and tech support: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers.

There are third-party firms that do repairs on iDevices, and there are places where you can order parts to DIY if you feel up to the task. Start with Google to search for these.

If you double tap the home button and swipe the right at the bottom of the screen in the task bar, do you see the round adjuster on volume slider next to the music icon? If you don't try this.

Look at the dock connector opening on the iPad where the cable gets plugged in and see if there is any dirt or debris in there. Blow in there to loosen any dust that might be built up. I have read where some users have used a toothbrush - very gently - to clean the connection in there - and the sound returned to the iPad speaker.

If you use a dock with the iPad, this makes sense because there could be something in there preventing the speaker from working because the iPad "thinks" that it is still connected to the dock speakers.

This was an article that was writtne for iPhone sound problems, but there might be something in here that you haven't tried yet.

Then, the next thing that I would try is to restore the iOS software and if that doesn't work, a trip to an Apple Store or AASP would be in order. You may have a hardware issue. Use the information that Kappy posted for you above.

My iPad sound was suddenly available on headphones only. After trying everything for two hours, a friend of mine stumbled upon the solution. Open the YouTube channel and in the right up corner there is a microphone function. Tap on it and it will ask you to speak what you are looking for. Say something and after it finds it, your sound will be on on speaker as it should be. Good luck and if it helps, drop a line.

My ipad 3 also has the same issue. For couple of months before the speaker stopped working completely (and when my 1 year warranty was still active) it was giving a creaking sound but it used to normalize after few seconds. So i never went to Apple to report this since this was intermittent.  Even now at times the sound comes on for just few seconds gives out a creaking sound and then doesn't work completely. With headphones there are of course no issues.

I researched online and tried all the apple communities suggestions. In fact did the factory restore but the problem still did not go. So i finally took it to an Apple Store where the representative restored the factory settings again and on seeing that nothing changed he offered me to give my ipad in exchange for a brand new ipad 3 for a discounted price. This was because the warranty was up by one month. Plus I was also told that this is the only option since Apple cannot repair this issue.

I've been an apple fan boy for long time and I thought I was paying higher amount for products that will be long lasting. The sad truth in my case is, Apple is asking me to pay me almost twice the amount if I want to use its product for over an year.

Thanks "Demo" for the multi-solution answer. Saved me lots of time fumbling around.

I knew the problem with mine had to be in the settings because I was getting sound out of the headphones and through the speakers for iTunes and YouTube apps but none of my games.

Toggling the speaker mute button in the task bar worked like a charm!
