Which model do you have (15" late 2011, for example)?

You can try removing applications and files that you're not using anymore.
If your Mac is running slow, you can try repairing your disk permissions in Disk Utility by clicking the Macintosh HD partition. Make sure you're on the First Aid tab and click Verify Disk Permissions. This may take a while. Once it's complete, you can click Repair Disk Permissions if there are any disk permission errors.
