Apple will replace the iPad for $299.
I only got it 6months ago and have been very careful with it.
You're probably going to have a tough time convincing them that this was not from misuse. Things like this don't just happen on their own. Just preparing you.

It's in warranty, and if you did not break it, drop it, etc., I suggest you take it to an Apple store and request a free replacement. Speak to managers, etc. If you're being honest, they will see it and don't give up.
Not even Apple products are perfect.
Hope this helps.

The iPad is pretty much held together with adhesive...sounds as though this adhesive is failing in the area that you indicate. I would personally take it to an Apple Store and let them evaluate it. It does sound like a defect (adhesive failure) and if it's deemed as a defect by Apple, they should replace it if it's still under warranty.

Thanks for reminding me. Last year there were threads where people had the same issue. I just searched 'communities' and only this post came up.
So Georgie_M, check old threads, google it, etc., and print out whatever proof you might have. Even if nothing shows up, it is a problem. Go to a manager at the Apple store.

Thanks guys, in the end I just took it to my local Genius Bar and they replaced it straight away - she didn't even look at it! I asked if it was a common problem and she said 'not officially'.

If I had dropped it or otherwise 'misused' it I would have gotten it replaced by my insurers.

I'm very happy that your ipad was replaced! And I thought it a little amusing that the woman who helped you at the Genius Bar said the adhesive was 'not officially' a problem.
