If you want a viable substitute for Word, take a look at Pages in the App Store...only $20 in the US, will save in the Word .doc format for use by Word users.  Has a lot of very good and intuitive features.

    On your Mac

    TextEdit (in Applications)

    Download or Purchase and download.

    Libre Office (free)

    Open Office (free)

    Pages (inexpensive)

    Word (expensive)

OpenOffice.org, which is very compatible with MS Office file formats.

NeoOffice and LibreOffice also come hightly recommended.

All have their strengths and weaknesses, and I will not declare "good, better, best".  Try them yourself by downloading.
