Q: Connect Airport Extreme USB HDD with Windows over WAN

Everything works fine in my LAN, but not when I want to connect from Windows PC over WAN. I allready tried the SMB port forwarding from public 8888 to private 445. This won't work. The WAN option in the aiport Extreme (model 2012) is on. Please Help.

AirPort Extreme 802.11n (5th Gen), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

This is so so risky.. using a different port is not going to hide open SMB shares for long.

Is the Extreme the main network router?

Port forwarding in the later version utilities is really poor.. try using the earlier v5 utility.

How to load 5.6 into ML.

    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.

Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg

    2. Download and install unpkg.

    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/

Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.

Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.

You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

There is a good reason why most ISP block SMB protocol over the net.. good luck.

Thanks for your answer. Must SMB working when I turn the WAN sharing option on? When I do a portscan on my WAN IP the 445 port is open if the WAN sharing option turned on.

SMB is not shared with the WAN side of the TC.. the only way to do it is to forward the port required. You do not have to tick wan sharing as that is only relevant to AFP.. as far as Apple is concerned only AFP is shared to the internet as only AFP has the security required.

Is the TC the main router in the network? If so and you still want to pursue this.. you need to port forward 445 in the TC to the LAN side. That is all. What happens after that is somebody discovers it.. and the rest is history.

You cannot use 445 on the internet as it is blocked.. so you need to port translate.. but that does not work very well in the TC using v6 utility .. do it from v5 utility.

I strongly recommend you do this the right way.. get a vpn router.. relegate the TC to bridged and access the network over vpn.. that is the only way that is secure from a PC.
