When you're trying to play your purchased iTunes movies, what icon are you going to on your Apple TV?
There is a Movies icon and a Computer icon. The Movies icon will stream the movies from iTunes, but if you go to the Computer icon, it will use Home Sharing and stream it from your computer.
In my experience, I have found that playing the movies from the Computer icon/using Home Sharing is more reliable than streaming from iTunes.
If you are going to the Computer icon and are getting that error message, you can take a look at this article to troubleshoot Home Sharing: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2972
If you are still having trouble, try power cycling your Apple TV and router. Next look at the section called "Network troubleshooting" in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1551

At first the issue was with the Home Sharing under the Computer icon, but the problem also persists when I try to use the Movies icon as well. At first I thought it was router acting up but my Apple TV and my router are a couple feet away from one another and all my other wireless devices (MBP, iPad, iPhone) were all working on the wireless with no problems. I haven't tried to use the ATV in a couple of days so I'll definitely check out that article and see if it helps.
