Sounds like a software issue like mine. Try the cleaning tips on here but I bet you when you visit the Apple store they're going to find it was a software issue.

Mine is doing the following:  Alarm wont work, incoming calls (Ringer) wont work.  Music/Pandora wont work.  Texting and opening and closing clicks wont work, facetime wont work, speaker mode wont work.  But i can call someone and talk to them normally.  I can hear everything else when the headsets is plugged in.

However, I just called Apple Tech Support and they said it's not a software glitch due to a VERY LOW volume of calls reporting this issue.  She  could have transferred me to an actual tech guy but I had to pay $119.99.

I am also facing same issue since last 2 days.

No sounds comes for alarms. Ringer(for incoming calls) wont work.

No sounds comes when play anything on Youtube/Pandora/Netflix.

But if I use headsets/bluetooth , everything works fine.

When I use reset all the settings first time, speaker starts working, but after 1 day same issue came again.

Now resetting all the settings also not solving the problem.

Hi all! I have a success story with my Iphone4 first going crazy and then not showing the volume display while pressing either button.

My Iphone4 gone crazy after being inside a sligthly humid backpack....

First thing was to turn it off, then putting it inside a rice bag for my standard 12 hours in order to dry it.

Then it apparently was doing well but later i'v noticed the volume control buttons were not working as planned. Also the keyboard sounds were not playing. While playing music, the sound didnt come out from the speakers, but weird enough, the phone ringed with incoming calls and also the speakerphone worked during calls.

    2 things I did:

    1. Hard reset: didnt work

    2. With a fair amount of patience I cleaned all the holes of the phone with a sophisticated tool: a wooden toothpick. Very carefully I removed all the dust and hairballs of the audio jack and the power or dock connector (I think the latter is more important since there is where I found the scariest hairballs...). THIS WORKED.

    Hope it works for someone!

I struggled with the speakers not working for a long time until I finally solved the problem. I tried the reset, swabbing out the headphone jack, cleaning lint/debris from charging dock (limited success with that one), but finally found the problem. There was TINY SPOTS of corrosion built up on 2 pins of the charging dock port connector. I used the tip of a sewing needle and GENTLY scraped off the green corrosion. That totally fixed it! My iPhone 4S has had zero sound issues for the last 3 months. If your problem is not corrosion try taking an old toothbrush and put a little rubbing alcohol on the bristles and scrub the connector dock really good. The alcohol cleans, then evaporates! This method works very good to remove dust and grime build up. Hope this helps everybody with their sound problems- good luck!

DISABLE BLUETOOTH IF A DEVICE IS NEARBY....

I had this problem and was trying everything else posted (checking headphone jack, etc.) to no avail....then when I was attempting to play music again I noticed the bluetooth symbol was highlighted in orange by the volume bar of the music player.  My iHome is about 10 feet away in my bathroom and because I had Bluetooth enabled on my phone whenever I attempted to play music it was trying to connect to the bluetooth device.  This is why the ringtone and app notifications were still sounding, but the actual music wasn't.  So, if you want to play the music directly through your phone instead of the bluetooth device (which may be turned off), you have to go into settings and turn off bluetooth.

I've been suffering this problem for weeks. The solution: clean around the dock Connector with a credit card (or similar) in a GOOD LIGHT. Scrape that baby right out and all around.

100% sure this is your problem! Your secondary mic is faulty. It's located in the tiny hole next to the audio jack. You can let it replace for around 30 dollars. I can do it too but I'm from Belgium.

Very strange that people find different ways of fixing the EXACT same problem!

My iPhone 4S has had the same problem over the past two days and has lost the sound on four occasions then came back. Whether it comes back by coincidence or not, I do not know, however the first time the media sound started playing after pushing a small piece of card into the dock connector. The two times after that I was just messing around with the volume controls in the settings. This last time, I locked my phone and switched the mute on/off button a few times then unlocked my phone... And hey presto the sound was back. I have no idea what's causing this problem to occur over and over again with different solutions curing it! Baffling!
