AirPlay Mirroring only works with a router, not with a direct connection between the Apple TV and the Mac. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404
Also, as the Apple TV has only got an Ethernet port, this makes the possibility to use AirPlay Mirroring without a router impossible

Thanks for the response. I don't know if I'm being completely clear though, I don't intend to make a direct physical connection between the Apple TV and my Macbook, but to make a wireless network with my Macbook and connect the Apple TV to that network. Ergo, the Apple TV is still connected to a wireless network, but instead of a router w/ Internet broadcasting the network, it's my Macbook.
Oh well, I already ordered one and it should be here on Tuesday. I'll try it myself when it gets here, and I'll post back here with my results.

I am wondering the same thing. What were your results?

I found out after getting the device that my Macbook is too old and not compatible with mirroring anyway. But best of luck to you if you try it!
