The con is you lose access to all PPC apps.
The pro is that you can access the cloudy stuff and play with iOS devices. There are some performance improvements, but I don't find them complelling, prefering to do most of my computing in Snow Leopard, although I have bootable volumes of these new cats.27" i7 iMac SL, Lion, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), G4 450 MP w/Leopard, 9.2.2

If you do upgrade to ML you should check out OS X Mountain Lion: The Missing Manual - David Pogue . This book is very easy reading, non technichal & non geeky. I strongly recommend this book as it takes you step-by-step through Mountain Lion.

5 year old machine? Unless it's a high end iMac or MacPro, I would stick with 10.6.8 until it dies.
Buy a new machine if you want to play footsie with the Lions, it needs the better perfomance anyway.
I have a Early 2011 machine and it's staying on 10.6.8, the performance is freaking awesome!
