Try Home Sharing.
Transfer purchases is working too (if you have an unlimited and free internet connection )
see here (Moving Library with windows migration, home sharing, external hard drive and transfer purchases): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
and here (Moving Library with iPod): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329

what i did with my external hard drive was copy the itunes folder (on my old computer) and then paste it in the external hard drive. then on my new mac i erased the itunes folder (Finder/Music) and then i pasted the copied itunes folder on my hard drive. then i opened itunes and i went to File/add music to library and i selected the itunes folder

No, It's not enough. Do like this Article (External Hard drive part) and use your external hard drive (not your iPod). http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
!!!!!! If you didn't organized your media folder "Make sure you have enough space to copying all of your song in your Old PC media folder (iTunes do it)" !!!!!!

but when i consolidate my files my old computer says "copying files failed. the file name was invalid or too long"

It means there is a song file that has a really long name. iTunes has a problem with it.
Look in your music folder. Temporarily move out files with really long names and see if the copy will now work.
