if it persists after following these steps then i would take in to have it looked at for possible graphics or video issues.

Aug 2, 2013 6:12 AM in response to eallenwarrenby iheartapple1970,regarding the possible hard drive issue. if the mac will boot up then use time machine to backup the mac. however if it won't boot up and you have access to another mac it's possible to retrieve the data from the computer via target disc mode. the following article tells how to do this:

also apple service providers usually offer data recovery services for a fee to help get the data as well.
