Aug 5, 2013 1:23 PM in response to RichCampby Kappy,The last OS you can install would be Leopard 10.5.x. However, you will need the retail Leopard installer DVD. You cannot use a gray labeled OEM copy as they will not work except with the model with which they came.
You should be able to find retail Leopard discs on eBay, Amazon, and Google. Be sure to buy only retail discs.

Aug 5, 2013 1:26 PM in response to RichCampby Allan Eckert,I have an install disk but the iMac won't boot from CD
Where did the install disk come from?
If it is for another Mac it will not work.
I have a new MBP, is there anyway to install the OS from a new computer?
No, The new MBP is Intel based and the OS will not work on PowerPC Mac.

Aug 5, 2013 1:34 PM in response to Allan Eckertby RichCamp,It is a retail disk. In Mac OS X it pops up and when I click the installer it says to restart. When I boot it from a new Mac it goes to a screen with white writing.

Aug 5, 2013 1:47 PM in response to Allan Eckertby Kappy,If it's a Leopard DVD it can't be "too new" for a G5. None of them came with Leopard originally.

Aug 5, 2013 1:47 PM in response to RichCampby Kappy,Put the Leopard DVD into your G5's optical drive. Do this:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
2. Restart the computer.
3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
logo appears.
5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
