Q: Spilt Water on MBP. What should I do?

I knocked my bottle of water on top of my mbp's keyboard about an hour ago. I immediately unplugged it and shut down. After the spill I shut it down and haven't powered it back on. There was a pool of water that formed on the upper part of the keyboard (where the vents are) before I turned it upside down and saw  water dripping out from inside. I'm worried that with that much water there is going to be irreversible damge. I was reading that even after a few months water damage can show up even if the computer operates normally.

My question is... Since I am covered under applecare can I take it to the applestore to have them crack it open and clean up the remaining water pools? Or should the water accumultion be gone within a few days if I don't turn it on and keep it turned upside down?

Water spills are not covered by AppleCare. Your only recourse is what your insurance company is offering.

    • Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
    • Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
    • Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
    • Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
    • Note what was spilled on your Mac.
    • Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.

    Don't

    • Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
    • Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
    • Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).
    • Do not put in a bag of rice in as much as rice will get into the ports and optical drive and do further damage.

Hate to break the bad news but since you spilt water on your Mac your warranty is void. Apple doesn't cover accidental damaged which a liquid spill is.

All you can do is take it apart, or have someone else take it apart, and clean all the water out and HOPE.

I opened it up just now and saw a little bit of water accumulation on the back of the inside cover. I'm trying to clean up the water spots with a paper towl but I'm worried that most of the water is on the other side of the logic board. I was wanting to take it to the applestore so they could make sure all the water drops are gone just to be on the safe side before powering it back on again after a few days.

    I read this article: http://www.lockergnome.com/osx/2013/01/06/what-to-do-if-you-spill-liquid-on-a-ma cbook-pro/

It says that if you have applecare you can receive a discount for accidental damage. Which might be worth it if they can save my mbp.

So what should I do? Take it to the applestore immidiately or leave it unplugged and upside down for a few days to let it dry out? Something other then a copy and paste generic response would be nice...

The article is incorrect, Applecare does not cover you for accidental damage.

Whether you take it the Store now or later is up to you, do not switch it on until it is totally free from moisture, plus a few days to make sure.

It may be finished now, or later, or you may get lucky, but time alone will answer that.

Leave the system open in a cool dry area, Air Conditioned space. I'd also leave the screen open and upside down resting on the top of the screen and the palmrest edge.

Also if you know someone that is good with their hands and tools have them disassemble it so it can fully dry out.

Bring it to a repair facility NOW.  Look at this tip article:

    Ciao.

Sig has used that a lot.  Good advice.

Thanks for your reply. By repair facility you mean an unofficial Apple repair place?

I suggest am Apple Store or AASP if possible.  If the only alternative is an "unofficial Apple repair place", so be it, but that will deplete your bank account.

    Ciao.

I admit as much to the "style"  it saved me the time of typing the same.

My first comment came from the apple forum poster SIG, ........whose expertise is well admired by one and all

    * Yes, even if completely DRY, the iron and particles left behind BY the water is more than enough to damage/destroy the circuitry.

More people need to realize for long term care of their laptop, they need TWO insurances.....Apple Care...and theft/loss/accident insurance.  Of the many years I did laptop repairs, it saddens me that more people dont know about this necessity

    *Updated with credit to Sig

Maybe a credit to Sig might be in order?
