Q: MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) crashes continuously

My MacBook crashes continuously for about a month now (started while using OS X Lion). My thought was to wait for Mountain Lion, make a clean install (formatting HDD) and then this should be resolved. Well, it didn't work. Still crashing while using more than 3-4 apps at the same time. All updates installed.

I really hope that someone is able to help me here. I already tried to run the Apple Hardware Test, but it's not available on my machine...

My guess it's that this might be a hardware problem, as it happened with Lion before.

This is the error report from the last crash (20 minutes ago):

    Here's summary of my problems:

    1. Snow Leopard OS no problem.

    2. Lion OS problem of occasional panic shutdowns with no message and a lot of tinkering to get it shutdown and restarted.

    3. Mountain Lion OS frequent shutdowns at startup, every program and eventually made MacBook unusable. The only good thing was I was now getting error messages...

Here's summary of visits to Genius Bar:

    1. Offer to fix for $400 and suggestion to reoad OS.  I reloaded OS and it worked OK for almost a day, then started shutting down per #3 above.

    2. When I went back to Bar 2nd time, their testing program shutdown and they replaced Logic Board and I had them replace battery.  No charge for Logic Board.  Funny, with new LB, my Apple accounts recognized my computer as a new one.  Same with some programs I was updating or even using.

So far, no shutdowns and everything working great.

    Hi,

    I'm writing from Italy.

I have a Macbook Pro 15" buyed on July 2010.

I had the black screen problem some months ago.... Initially i solved with gfx card status.

Then I arrived to have 10-15 kernel panic every day.

Last week I booked an appointment on Apple Store and the Genius did the video test....

    Red screen "Video Failed"

They changed for free the logic board.... I DON'T have the apple care program.

Thank you for this topic that made me able to find the TS4088 issue.

I had the same problem upgrading to mountion lion from snow leopard on the Mid 2010 Macbook Pro 15. Seems very common. Thanks to all the threads I found the temp work around and the fix.

    Temp work around:

Google and Install gfxCardStatus. Simple to install. Leave on Dynamic Switching. From there it will Monitor and Alert you to what apps switch you to the Nvidia Graphic Card. Simply don't use those apps: For example, You'll see an alert when Google Chrome forces the NVidia Graphics Card to be used. Firefox and Safari do not. So don't use Google Chrome for now. Same with Skype as you'll see. The  kernal panics stopped when by avoiding use of the NVidia Graphics Card

    The fix:

Go to the Genius Bar and Cross your Fingers for a good tech. Mine ran some tests. The initial tests passed but then he ran a video test and that failed. That fail is what you want.  If you get that fail this issue will be fixed free of charge, as it's a factory defect. So even without an extended warranty (my one year expired in Sep 2011) they are putting in a new logic board for free for this issue/model (Today is Jun 8, 2013). The cost will be around $450.00 if it doesn't work out in your favor.

I asked the tech how long I could have procrastinated on coming in: He said if I waited 4 years past my original purchase date I'd probably be out of luck.

Actually I should have read the post above mine as he said the same thing

I had the same problem since I upgraded to moutain lion 10.8.3. I own mid 2010 MBP 15 inch.

Brought mine to Apple store and they ran a few test and video test failed. I was told it was a known issue to Apple and it falls under quality program and I get to change my logic board free of charge. I bought mine in April 2010.

    Hey Guys

I have the same kernel panics since a few months with the NVRAM read error. Bought my MacBook Pro in August 2010, so I would be within the warranty for the known issue.

My Problem is, I replaced my optical drive with an SSD one year ago. I did this change by my self. So, will they change my LB as well for free even if they notice that I've opened my MacBook and did some changes?

Or should I put in the optical drive again before the Genius appointment and hope, they dont get it?

No reason to replace the upgrades - if the logic board fails the test, you'll get a new logic board.

Are you shure that I don't have to put my optical drive back into the MB? Just because the OD is not on the list of the user replacable parts.

I have the same issue as described above, but the machine (Mid-2010 MBP) PASSED the video test last week. I am at a loss on where to go from here. When I was trying to rebuild the machine with a fresh install of both Lion and Mountain, the machine crashed several times. Very frustrating. Any ideas out there?

    Hey Guys

    Here's a short review.

Went to the AASP in my town and showed the printed TS4088 to them. They told me I should leave my MacBook there for the test, which takes about half a day.

After two hours they phoned and told me the test failed and they would order a new logic board. The logic board was replaced two days later and I could grab my MacBook.

This was three days ago. I'm really satisfied with the service so far. No kernel panics, even with stress tests. Of course the replace was for free. It was really fast and my mac runs even better than before.

So to everyone with the kernel panics, grab your MacBook and go to an Apple Store or an AASP. You won't regret it. Even if you replaced your optical drive with an HDD, it's no problem. They won't even say a word about it and replace your Board without objection.

You can see this problem on my video : http://youtu.be/fvKaRJZlVco. With this problem Apple change my motherboard for free. I hope this video will help you.

The problem happens when your macbook pro 15 core i7 mid-2010 passes the intel graphics card to nvidia 330M graphics card with iPhoto for example.

Does this issue only occur with the 15-inch, Mid 2010 MPB? What about the 13-inch?

Only with the 15", which has the discrete NVIDIA GPU. If you're having problems with a 13", it's a different issue.

    Hi all

I also had this problem with my mid2010 MBP and had the logic board replaced by apple as described above.

Everything working well now except the sound quality of the internal speakers is now TERRIBLE compared to pre-replacement. Has anyone else had this problem?

I am having this issue. It's getting worse.  Computer crashes and restarts multiple times in one sitting.  I took it to an Apple authorized repair place, they contacted Apple and Apple denied the repair.  I hope Mavricks helps this issue.

I upgraded to Mavericks (fresh install) and it still crashes. Bad thing is gfxcardstatus 2.2.1 doesn't work properly when switching to integrated mode only. Screen becomes buggy automatically even after sleep unlike past OS like Lion and Mountain Lion. I don't like gfxcardstatus 2.3 because it doesn't allow power source based switching.

Oh well I guess it's time to bring it to a premium Apple reseller. I'm from the Philippines so I'm not sure about getting a free logic board replacement.
