Aug 8, 2013 5:00 AM in response to Miss. Kby Carolyn Samit,Your Mac runs maintenance for you in the background. Avoid third party so called Mac cleaning utilities. They can do far more harm than good.

Aug 8, 2013 7:42 AM in response to Miss. Kby Allan Eckert,In my testing of applications that claimed to clean Macs, I found them to either be worthless since they failed to do what they claimed or dangerous because they did risky things without even telling they were going to do them. For these reason I recommend that all "cleaning" applications be avoided.

Aug 8, 2013 7:57 AM in response to Miss. Kby iheartapple1970,i recomment opening up your finder window and going through everything that is in here: movies, pics, music, documents, downloads etc and throw away anything you no longer use or need including applications.
once you have thrown away any unwanted items be sure to restart before emptying the trash on the dock since that way it tends to empty faster. (also a "secure" empty of the trash is not needed, normal empty by clicking the button will do)
can also remove the user and mac HD caches as well
if you have a large iphoto or itunes library you may want to look at putting those on an external drive to free up more room on the internal HD. can also get more RAM if it's able to be upgraded further.

Oct 23, 2015 7:40 AM in response to iheartapple1970by kevinof1950,Thanks for this. I may be a bit ignorant but do you know how i can work out what or where is the stuff labelled as "other" in the storage indicator. I have 50 gigs of photo, music, apps etc and 250 "other". I did recently empty my iPhoto trash (900 items, about 4 gigs i guess). I can't imagine what things will take up 250 gigs!

Seriously, did you read any of this thread before posting?
