Who is your eMail provider, the part after the @ sign? Many/most providers have size limits, how big are these big ones?
In Mail's Window Menu, choose Connection Doctor, any red dots for status, if so what is the message?
Then click the Show Details button & Check again.

Thank you very much BDAqua, the connection doctor tip is really useful, and I have upped my size limit with my provider - i now have 1gig, which should be enough for me.
One question I have though is why do the email messages sit on the Pop server? And then you have to clear them, but if you clear them, they are still available in your inbox? it makes no sense why they sit on and clog up the server! Is there any way to automate this clearance? or stop them sitting on the server? Thank you and have a good day!

Yes I do have that checked, is that right?

OK, if that is checked, then they do not take up any space on the Server end, only on your Mac, but I don't think the biggest problem was space on the server, but the limit for the size of an eMail that can be sent.
