Q: finder keeps restarting in 10.8.4

Macbook air, OSX 10.8.4

Finder keeps closing & reopening windows about every minute or so.  Desktop icons flash and typically finder window closes or goes to background.

Could be coincidence, but only started happening *after* I did a verify disk and repaired (via Repair / Disk Utility on restart) said "errors" (weren't many).

Any suggestions?  All the related stuff I read here or find via google seems too old on for other OS version to apply.

Boot into the Recovery partition (Command+R) and and use Disk Utility to repair the disk. If that fails reboot again in the the Recovery volume and reinstall the system.

FWIW, I booted into Recovery and did the Repair disk previously... and THEN the problem appeared.   But I can try again.

Question:  will reinstalling the OS erase/harm any of my use files?  Will it reset preference files other than the Finder?

    Thanks.

    Applications
    Aug 9, 2013 6:26 PM in response to williamd123

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

    Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View â–¹ Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Step 2

Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Thanks for taking an interest in solving!  Quick question:  does reinstalling the OS harm any user files?

I think I deleted the Finder plist file (to have it recreate a new prefs list) earlier to try and solve this.  FYI.

the crashed app is clearly the Finder... dozens and dozens of crash reports for the finder found in the syslog.  Here's one of the most recent. Editing out some of the details to avoid too lengthy; if I've left out something important then let me know.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

DId both tests (guest account and safe mode).  Finder did NOT crash in either.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.

These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.

Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.

Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.

Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.

    Step 1

Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.

    Step 2

    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit

This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.

Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.

    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit

    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit

Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.

    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit

Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.

    You can then quit Terminal.

Hi. I had been experiencing something very similar with the finder crashing on 10.8.4 on my macbook air.

I solved the issue by finding out that google drive was causing my finder to crash. I run google drive and dropbox together so i disabled "show file sync status icon" on the google drive preferences... and all fixed with no more crashes.

Could be totally unrelated but it an easy fix rather than installing the OS again.

Had a similar problem in that whenever i click on a network drive within the finder it crashes and restarts. The issue seems to be localized to only one user account as tested in the previous step. So I tried the above. Here is what resulted:

Thanks a lot for the tip.....disabling "show file sync status icon" on the google drive preferences solved this for me as well.

I had the same problem.  Thought that it could be related to two unroutine events that occurred yesterday.

    1. I ran into my first Kernal Panic or
    2. I upgraded my Java.

However, after reading this Apple Discussion thread I found out that others had the same problem of what appeared to be finder resets at recurring regular intervals.

I too am running a GoogleDrive.app (however, on my SnowLeopard MacBookPro) and thought that maybe Google prefs are giving the appearance of driving my poor Finder crazy.

    gDrivePrefs.jpg

So as others shared on the board I edited my GoogleDriveprefs and deselected "Show file sync status icons..." (see attached pic) and applied changes -- no more blinking desktop icons/Finder resetting.

Thank you once again, Apple Discussions family.

    Hi everyone,

I had the same problem after uograding to Mavericks. The finder crashed and retarted every 5 seconds. This discussion her lead me to the Console program which showed me a third party program ("KanBox") caused the troubled. Mavericks had move this app in the "Incompatible software" folder but did not remove a "Kanboxfinder.app" which was in the root /llibrary/application support/ folder. After I had removed this app with the terminal program everything runs fine immediately. No finder crash anymore. Maybe this is helpful to others.
