David - Net Nanny was the problem for us as well.  Appreciate the tip.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was having the same issue as others here (a pulling my hair out trying to figure it out)...Ethernet connected and operational, but Mail or browsers couldn't access the Internet. This suggestion for removing NetNanny worked for me. Although in my case I had ContentBarrier installed. Tried using AppDelete to remove it, seemed as though it worked, but found out now that it left A LOT of residual files. I had to use the original ContentBarrier installer to remove the app and all of the associated files. Restarted the my iMac and was back up and running again.

OMG, Thank you very much rodneyfrompueblo for the post, its 2 years later based on the posting date but it really helped me out a lot. I did what the posting said and safari is back up and running. Again thank you very much.

I wish I could donate 5$ to you via paypal for the help, again thank you very much.

goodbye and if i don't see again good day, good evening, and good night.

This is caused by Norton settings.  Go to the Norton menu, choose norton firewall and disable application blocking and disable location awareness.

Thank you abesse for the answer to the problem. Just spent about 5hrs trying to sort this out.

    The cuprit for me was:

/System/Library/Extensions - and found the little netnanny referrence in there. Deleted it, restarted and now working like a dream.

    Thanks again, much appreciated.

I got the same problem : NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1. I use safari version 7.0.4, OS X 10.9.3. I also have virus barrier 10.6.18. My problem is that I can only access virus barrier by a small icon on my top right tool bar, but everything is locked in that icon. In finder, virus barrier is nowhere to be found. I'd like to try everything I read here, but I'm in a dead end.... Can anyone help me out? Tks

Thank you David ! Netnanny was my culprit too and my system is now running like new after weeks of spinning rainbows and then today getting the error message and not being able to connect to the internet.

    Hi,

Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
