Q: Epson Printer Filter Failure with rastertoescpII

I recently updated my Epson drivers via Software Update. Now when I try to print, I get an error message of a "filter failure" and that "rastertoescpII quit unexpectedly".

In the log file it says:

(/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpII.app/Contents/MacOS /rastertoescpII) crashed on signal 11

I have tried resetting the printing system via the Print & Scan preferences and downloading & installing the Epson Printer Software 2.15 (downloaded from the Apple support site). But nothing seems to help.

When I go to the Epson driver download page, it says that I can only get drivers via Software Update.

Does anybody have suggestions?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Having the same problem after accepting a software update in the App Store application ( /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter2/Filter/rastertoescpII.app/Contents/MacOS /rastertoescpII)

I tried tricks from other topics like removing the printer (an Epson SX125). The driver installed quicly and silently again, unfortunately with the same error again.

I tried loading software from Epson support directly but this did not kill the beast either.

Waiting for more information on forums or a new software update.

If possible, restore the following folder from a backup (such as a Time Machine snapshot) that was made before you installed the update:

    /Library/Printers/EPSON

Do you know of any other solutions if no such backup exists?

(Others might, but my Time Machine doesn't seem to take snapshots of the /Library folder.)

Just to make sure we're all on the same page you're referring to this Library folder

and not the invisible Users/Home/Library folder.

    No.

Time Machine doesn't seem to take snapshots of the /Library folder.

In the sidebar of a Finder window, select the icon representing your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) At the top level of the volume are folders with these names, among others:

    • Applications
    • Library
    • System

Enter Time Machine and select the most recent snapshot, which is behind the frontmost window. Are those folders present in the snapshot?

Yes - that's the Library folder (it should be the one located on your boot volume rather than the Users/Home/Library folder).

Alas, my snapshots only include "opt" (which has X11 stuff) and "Users" folders.

Then you have another, unrelated, problem with Time Machine. It's too late to do anything about the printing problem except to contact EPSON support, which is probably a waste of time, or wait for an update to fix the defective drivers. I have no idea when, if ever, that update will be released.

This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including exclusions. The backups won't be affected. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

    Services ▹ Reveal

from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy the file to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Reboot and recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane. It will show that you have no backups. Don't worry; that's expected. Run a backup to test. The backup may take much longer than usual. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.

This issue may be a result of the Computer Name being left empty

Open System Preferences and choose Sharing

Enter a name for your computer

    Restart the Computer

Test if you are able to print
