If v10.7 Lion or v10.8 is installed, you can reformat (erase) the disk using OS X Recovery

Mac OS X prior to v10.7, without the original install disc there is no way to reformat the drive.

If you can't reformat the drive, no one can use your computer without the admin password.

Thank you, do i need to erase anything usign the disc utility? Or go directly to reinstall?

The machine had originaly lion, but i purchased mountain lion. When i choose the reinstall option it says that Apple need to verify the computer before download of mountain lion starts. Will the new owner be able to use the os, even though i purchased it thru my account?

A Late 2011 iMac would not have shipped with any discs, but they are not necessary.

Boot OS X Internet Recovery by holding ⌘ option R (three fingers). That will force the iMac to re-download its originally installed OS so that you can restore its original condition. No Apple ID is required to reinstall a Mac's originally installed version of OS X.

You will need to erase the disk first using Disk Utility.

In the case of anything purchased from the App Store, not at all. For anything not purchased from the App Store, consult their end user licensing agreements. There is usually a procedure to transfer your user license to another user, which usually requires that you forfeit any copies you may have made.

Re Startup Disks: How about Mid 2011?  I don't recall them coming with the Unit. Correct?  Didn't want to start searching if they don't exist. Thanks.

No, they cannot. Anything downloaded from the app store is only for the purchaser - the license is not transferable.

You must not be using internet recovery which is what you need to do in order to erase and reinstall the original OS - hold Command + Option + R keys while booting up or restarting. Hold them until you see a spinning globe; after that it will take some time to connect to Apple's servers. When you see the Utilities window, use that Disk Utility to erase your drive. Then choose to reinstall the OS - it should be Lion.

    Edit:

if yours is a mid 2011, some did come with Snow leopard (on disks):

Mac OS X versions (builds) for computers - Apple Support

You can call Apple, give them your serial number and they'll be able to tell you. If it did come with disks, ask for replacement disks for a nominal charge. You will need them because the internet recovery will not install Snow leopard.
