Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

You can upgrade to Snow Leopard, always that your Mac is compatible. Open  > About this Mac, and have a look at Processor. If you have a Intel processor, buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard If you have a PowerPC processor, you can't use the printer.

After buying Snow Leopard, make a backup, insert the DVD and upgrade. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, and install all available updates. Finally, you will be able to use your printer

Be aware that none of the pre-2006 iMacs this forum covers can run any Mac OS higher than Leopard 10.5.8. The best way for us to help you figure out an upgrade path is to do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and, in the resulting window, click the "More Info..." button. That launches System Profiler.

The first Profiler screen has the details of your exact iMac variant This example is from a MacBookPro but the format is the same):

    SysProf_main_forASC.png

The SECOND line, "Model Identifier" will be followed by an alph-numeric code. For pre-2006 iMacs it has the format "PowerMacX,X" where the "X" is a number. For iMacs from 2006 and later, the format is 'iMacX,X"

Please tell us the machime identifier code and your scren size and we can help you with any possible hardware andor softer upgrade options.

Please DO NOT post your serial number, however.

You have to run Snow Leopard or higher to sync your iPhone and update iTunes.

The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:

    Jonny,

You can upgrade to 10.8.4.   But that said, you have to remember anything 10.7 or later will not run pre-2006 Mac OS X software without serious fiddling.

Dogs, the maximum operating system you can run is 10.5.8 on any G5.

If you need access to Mac OS 9, don't upgrade past 10.4.11, or keep 10.4.11 or earlier on a second partition or external firewire hard drive.  USB won't boot Mac OS X PowerMac versions.

    10.4.11 is the newest version of 10.4, which went in this sequence: 10.4, 10.4.1, 10.4.2, 10.4.3, 10.4.4, 10.4.5, 10.4.6, 10.4.7, 10.4.8, 10.4.9, 10.4.10, 10.4.11.   A combo update allowed you to skip several versions.

10.5 was a paid update and so was 10.4.

    Hi,

As I bought this off my friend in 2008 while it was still brand new, I'm not sure if it is pre-2006, but it's looking like it is. Nonetheless, I wish to buy the latest OS (as I've mistakenly bought an expensive HDD that requires at least a Snow Leopard 10.6.6+).

Is it possible to still change my OS entirely, or 10.5.8 is all my MacBook can do? If I can at least upgrade to a Snow Leopard, is Snow Leopard available in download format instead of buying the DVD?

IF I can download OS X Lion, where can I buy it from?

Sorry for so many questions! I've been using non-Macs at work and decided to give my Mac an overhaul, short of buying a new laptop.

    Thanks

    Jen

    Jenxgar,

Nope, all MacBooks are 2006 or later.    And yours being a Core2Duo means it is compatible with Mac OS X 10.7.

It is just not compatible with Mac OS X 10.8 or later, which needed a model identifier of MacBook 5,1 or later.

Read the rest of this thread.  You'll need to purchase the 10.6 retail installer from the Apple online store, to get to 10.6.6 (or if you like to 10.6.8), and then if you have no PowerPC applications which predate 2006, you can upgrade to 10.7 from the App Store, and then up to as high as 10.7.5.

Sorry Bakers93, your Mac can't upgrade past 10.5.8.  I don't have time to tell you more.  If you start your own thread, and state what you need on the machine, someone is sure to be able to help you.

Note, if you are running 10.4.11 or earlier, 10.5 and later can't run Classic.
