I have the following MacPro, to which I want to add more memory:

Model Name:          Mac Pro

Model Identifier:          MacPro3,1

Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Processor Speed:          2.8 GHz

Number Of Processors:          2

Total Number Of Cores:          8

L2 Cache (per processor):          12 MB

Memory:          2 GB

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1:     1GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2:     Empty

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1:     1GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2:     Empty

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 3:     Empty

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 4:     Empty

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3:     Empty

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4:     Empty

Manufacturer:          0x80AD

I want to fill all the empty slots with 4GB DDR2 FB-DIMM memory. I know that I can get these DIMMs from Samsung, Hynix and Micron. I also know that configuring them into the slots correctly is important. So my plan is to shift the 1GB DIMM from DIMM Riser A 1 to DIMM Riser B 2; and purchase six 4-GB DIMMs to put in the remaining empty slots.

So then the configuration would look like this:

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1:     1GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2:     1GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1:     4GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2:     4GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 3:     4GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 4:     4GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3:     4GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4:     4GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

QUESTIONS:

1. Just need confirmation that this would be the correct way to do this. Or, if not, what would I need to adjust?

From the Apple Manual: Additional pairs of 1 GB, 2 GB, or 4 GB FB-DIMMs can be installed in the open DIMM slots, as illustrated below. Maximum memory is 32 GB. (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacPro_MemoryDIMM_DIY.pdf)

2. Since cost is a factor for me, can I do this in increments with a configuration like this?

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1:     1GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2:     1GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1:     4GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2:     4GB     DDR2 FB-DIMM     800MH

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 3:     empty

DIMM Riser B/DIMM 4:     empty

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3:     empty

DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4:     empty

Many thanks for any help with this. :-)
