A magnetic cover will always interfer with the compass but should not cause damage.  Remove the cover completely away from the device to get accurate compass readings.

Not that I'm aware of.  I have a magnetic cover on my iPad and the compass and all other hardware are fine.

This is an Apple forum, I have no experience with Samsung.

The magnetic cover on the iPad does effect the compass.  To get an accurate reading I remove the cover from the iPad and place it at least a meter away.

A compass works by measuring the magnetic field of the Earth. If there is another magnet near the device with the compass, or even just a piece of ferrous material, the compass will be inaccurate or might not work at all.
