How do i get my iPhone 4S out of recovery mode without losing all my data? I am not very tech savvy and too scared to do anything without instruction. My phone went into recovery mode when updating from IOS5 to 6.1.3 (or whatever was the latest yesterday). Oh how I wish I hadn't. I think I want my IOS5 back!

Can I use Google Maps on 6.1.3?

iPhone 4S, iOS 6.1.3

If you kept regular backups on your computer you can restore the latest backup after fixing the recovery mode problem.

Google maps is available as a free app in the App Store, and it is years ahead of the one that was built in to earlier versions.

.. and how do I do that please? Unfortunately iTunes says my last backup was on 12/0713, but I don't think that is too much of a problem. I don't think I actually have many photos or apps added in that time otherwise I would have synced.

You need to restore the iPhone first, the article below will guide you:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808

After restoring to factory settings iTunes on Your PC/Mac should say "Welcom to your new iPhone" when you see this there is an option to either set up as new or restore from back up. You want to select restore from back up.

Thanks .. it's just a bit scary to trust in the "restore", then back up formula. Especially as I can see no sign of the "restore to backup" option laid out for me at the start. It's a bit like walking through a door blindfolded and trussed trusting that someone will save you on the other side. Blind faith is not one of my strong points. Do you have a tutoiral with pictures that can show me the steps please?

I have been wondering whether to use one of the "recovery" programs.

The restore from back up option is not available when an iphone is in recovery hence why you do not see it. The article i priovided you shows how to restore the iphone if you wish to restore from back up after setting up the iPhone then the article below can help you out:

Okay I have read that info but the iTunes sreens I am experiencing has different messages.

1st = iTunes has dectected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore the iPhone before it can be used in iTunes.

2nd = iPhone is in recovery mode. Restore

3rd = Are you sure you want to restore the iPhone "iPhone" to its factory settings? All of your media and other data will be erased, and the newest version of iPhone software will be installed.

iTunes will verify the restore with Apple. After this process is complete, you will have the option to restore your contacts, calendars, text messaes and other settings.

.. now will my music, apps and photos be saved too? Here are the three messages.. you can see that the iTunes settings/screen configuation is not like those in the tutorial in the link. There is nothing in my "summary" and no restore to back up shown at this point. So I am wary to proceed.

Thanks again to my helpers. Also I don't mind if the whole update was aborted.

Just follow the prompts to restore, as I said you have no restore from back up because the iPhone needs to be restored to factory settings first then set it up. In terms of the content you downloaded onto the iPhone they are no longer there. But in saying that content downloaded from the iTunes Store is always attached to the Apple ID it was downloaded with so you will be able to redownload that content.

hmm .. thanks for you advice.. and as a genernal comment: "I think that Apple should give warning messages about this recovery mode problem when suggesting/promoting system updates and advise you to backup beforehand. It is irresponsible to assume all iPhone users are tech savvy. I am sure there has been a lot of unrecoverable data lost because of this recovery mode issue. Also, for no known reason I lost my entire contacts list on my phone a couple of months ago. I just openned my iPhone to make a call and it was gone. I cannot think of anything I did to precipitate this. Luckily I had something backed up on iCloud but it was not recent enough to not lose some data. I usually only backup when I sycn to my phone for downloading photos or recharging. I may have to do this more often."

.. oh and to call it recovery mode is a misnomer for sure!

You can set up automatic backups to iCloud. It will then back up apprximately every 24 hours. You can also back up to your computer, in addition the the iCloud backup. See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5262

If you upgrade your iPhone using iTunes on your computer rather than over the air it takes longer, but the very first step is a backup, so even if something goes wrong you still have the most recent contents of the phone available to restore.
