First check out the discussion "white background" under "More Like This" on the right.
You can also try adding the "Dodge (Lighten)" adjustment brush and lighten the backgound using wide brush strokes. Set the brush range to highlights usually works, and also check "Detect Edges" to avoid lightening unwanted areas.

If the shoes are mainly mid-tone, you could just bump the contrast up a little.
You could also probably just adjust the tone curve a bit to force "almost white" to "white"
