Q: creating a pop account

How do I create a pop email account?  Each time I try to create a new email account it builds an IMAP account which i do not want.  Somehow mysteriously I was able to choose between IMAP and POP at the top of a screen, but now this selection will not re appear for another account.

If that email provider doesn't offer POP, then you won't be able to get it.

    And IMHO, POP is inferior.

Something that deletes my emails when I don't want them deleted is inferior in my opinion.  I was able to build 1 POP account as somehow my iphone gave me that option once.  After that, it was IMAP or nothing.  I'm ticked off!

If you delete an email from any device with IMAP it deletes if from the server. Don't delete it if you need to keep it.

Your email provider may have ceased POP support.

IMAP only deletes your emails when YOU manually delete them.

If you don't want them delted, don't click 'delete'.

My provider did not cease POP.  I managed to open one POP account but the others turned up as IMAP.  I did find or stumble upon a fix though.  While on my 10th ttry to create a POP I misspelled my password.  I was prompted to fix that and at that time the choice of POP or IMAP appeared at the top of the screen.  Voila!  I created it and I'm off to the races.

I just don't see why anyone would want to have their iphone emails deleted when they were picked up on thier desktop.  How would that situation play out if a person was out of the area, and his wife picked up the email on the computer and Poof! the husband's iphone emails were disintegrated right before his eyes!

    Um, I think you're confused.

A POP email is where if the email is accessed by Device A, then it won't be available for Device B.

IMAP doesn't delete emails, it keeps them on the email server.

POP email pushes the email to the device permanently.

    @TJBUSMC 1973

Wrong.  POP does not delete the emails unless you tell them to.

    Oh. My. God.

POP MOVES the email from the server to the device.  They are on the device, but not on the server anymore.  POP email most certainly DOES move the email from the server.  That's why you can't see them on your phone after they've been accessed by your computer; they aren't on the server anymore.  And vice versa.

Wrong again USMC.  This only happens if I CHOOSE to have them deleted from the server with my settings.  If I CHOOSE to leave them on the server they will stay there until the cows come home.... but, that is not what I want.

You can change the settings on POP accounts to leave mail on the server.

The OP is happy, leave it alone. You do love to argue.

    USMC -

Maybe this will enlighten you a bit.  Look at the settings.

Yes, that's an OPTION for POP mail; to override it's normal behavior.  Notice how you have to ENABLE the prevention of deletion.

POP normal behavior is to delete the email from the server.

IMAP normal behavior is to NOT delete the email from the server.

You expressed problems with 'losing' emails that got deleted when you didn't want them to be deleted.

Therefore, for your preferences, IMAP makes more sense.

Now, if you want to have to constantly remember to turn that option on/off, instead of simply clciking 'delete' when it's time to delete the email, fine.

I'm talking about the default behavior, deggie.

POP's default is to delete from server after access.

IMAP's default is to not delete server after access.

OP reported issues with emails 'disappearing' when he didn't want them to.

That suggests an issue with POP mail, since IMAP doesn't ever delete until you tell it to do so.

Based on OP's stated problem, POP is inferior, IMAP is superior.

If OP wants to have to coninually toggle the setting, instead of just deleting manually when it's time, that's up to him.

But the DEFAULT behavior is what I was talking about.

Yeah, I meant default behavior, yeah that's the ticket!

No, you said nothing about default behavior until after I posted. But it doesn't take a lot of effor to change the default behavior and lots of people change default behaviors in all kinds of things.

I agree, POP was designed for one device accessing emails while IMAP is designed for multiple devices. Email also isn't designed to be shared by two people. But the justpokinalong likes sharing his mail account and likes the POP setup and has figured out a way to get it working again. For him that is his superior solution and he is happy with it. Who are you to argue with that?

And no, we didn't talke about DEFAULT behavior.

Why must you argue everything in almost every thread?
