Q: wireless printer multiplies in bonjour every 2 seconds

Hi there!

When I try to install my Samsung CLX-3175fw wireless printer in system preferences, the list of available printers shows thousands of nearly identical Samsung CLX-3170 series printers.

This list is extended by another duplicate every 2-3 seconds, so by now, I am in 20.000s and more. (see screenshot)

If I choose one of those printers, it is possible to print for about a day or so, but then the printer is not found anymore.

I had checked and unchecked again the printer share tickbox, tried to install and uninstall the original samsung drivers, nothing helped.

There seems to be anything corrupt with the printer settings. Mac OS or bonjour may not be able to save the printer's bonjour address or similar (I have no clue)

Does anyone have had a similar problem and knows how to solve it?

Does anybody know, which file is designated to save the available printers?

System: Mac OS Mountain lion 10.8.4 (12E55) on MB Air 2012

Best regards,

I've never seen this before so I don't have a fix. What is interesting is the last number in brackets which appears to be incrementing. Note the number before this one is the network address of the wireless interface.

I would suggest you open Safari and change the Preferences to include Bonjour in your Bookmarks Bar. If you then select this Bonjour bookmark you should see the Samsung printer. And if so, do you see one or multiples?

Your observation is correct, the number in brackets is incrementing.

If I display the bonjour link in  Safari, it shows also the bulk of multiplied printers with the incrementing numbe rin brackets.

    Annoying!

Every couple of hours, if have to re-install my printer...

Restart your router and see whether there's any change.

    Thanks, Linc.

But, unfortunately, restarting the router didn't have any effect on the described phenomenon.

I also tried to reset the network settings of the printer.

Also without effect. The printer entry in bonjour multiplies and multiplies, like bacteria in a petri disc.

There are no recent firmware updates for the printer available.

What is wrong? Is it a bug of bonjour, of the printer or is there any setting in my computer corrupted?

    Please help!

I would say that that it is the printer at fault. It is responsible for broadcasting itself on the network.

If you check the network settings of the printer, there may be an option to disable Bonjour. With this service disabled, you could then add the printer using one of the IP protocols, like LPD. This would require you to know the IP address of the printer, which you would use for the Hostname when you add the printer.

Or if the printer is still under warranty, I would take it back to the place of purchase and ask for a replacement.

    Hi Pahu!

    Thanks for your suggestion.

This helped a little - at least, I do not have to re-install the printer every couple of hours. The neverending list of available printers in bonjour has not solved, though.

Nevertheless, I am not able to use the scanner function of the multifunction-printer in the "image capture" app anymore...

    it drives me crazy!!!

I assume there is something wrong with some Mac OS X system files, but I don't know what and where.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    Dear Linc Davis!

The boot in safe mode did not solve the problem. The printer still multiplies every 2-3 seconds, nothing changed.

I recently found out, that there is a browser based frontend for setting the network preferences of my printer.

If I switch the printer to static IP, the problem is still there.

But if I uncheck the "Multicast DNS" Box in the UPnP settings (screenshot below), the printer will be available by using the IP-Address only. And: I am not able to use the scanner function anymore, which is possible, if I install it using bonjour.

If I re-check this box without changing anything else, the multiplication problem re-appears, but I am able to use one of the thousand scanners again (the screenshot about 15 seconds after re-checking "Multicast-DNS").

I assume, there's no third party software problem, when the error is reproducible in safe mode.

So there are mainly three units, which may be responsible for the error: Mac OS, the router or the printer.

Is there any possibility to access the scanner option in image capture by direct static IP? This would solve the major persisting problem (although not being the definite solution).

This seems to be a problem within the printer itself, so the solution, if there is one, would have to come from the manufacturer.

I have the same issues, there about 20 entries in bonjour for the same printer for every MAC laptop/device that is connected to the network.

    Any resolution yet?
