Q: make available home directories is grayed out

Upgraded AFP & OD servers from 10.6.8 to 10.8.4. Newly created sharepoints on the AFP server can't be activated as home directories because the line is grayed out. I would like to do it. Previous sharepoints remain activated but do not show as share points in the workgroup manager on the OD server.

I performed basic checks as changeip checkhostname and remade the binding between AFP server and OD one.

The funny thing is that in anticipation of such problems I bought the book "OSX Lion Server Essentials" and it says in the Network Home Folder chapter: "It is outside the scope of this book to assign a user a network home folder that is hosted on a server other than the server that is the OD master..."

Any hint of what I could outside of a clean install ?

Mac Pro, OS X Server

Clean install didn't solve this. It worked only by turning the AFP server into an OD replica, and this seems to work only for the first replica.

Yes, my own experience is that while previously in Snow Leopard Server and earlier a 'connected' server could be configured to provide network home directories, with Mountain Lion only OD Master or Replicas can now do this. However a Snow Leopard Server connected to a Mountain Lion master can still be configured to provide network home directories.
