When i had my ols MBP i could get sound that seemed 3D  the sound projected far to the left and right of the lap top speakers. In leapord or snow leapord there was a setting for wide sound. In lion I cannot find it.

i therefore down loaded Boom, That did not do it for me, So I then down loaded Hear.  That was no good iether. I then went to delete the programs and also using clean my mac.

Now the sound keeps changing , going bassy and then tinny. Its all messed up. So I need to some how re set the sound .

Delete the System Preferences.plist.  That may solve the issue.

OK went through this , there are no such files under the names of boom or hear. /

    What to try next?

I suspect that you may not have followed the directions correctly.  What you are looking for and should delete is "com.apple.systempreferences.plist ".  Go to the link and reread the following:

This should reset the sound parameters in System Preferences to the original values.  Before you do this you might delete Boom and Hear as they may have an affect even when the System Preferences.plist is rebuilt.

You also mentioned " I then went to delete the programs and also using clean my mac. ".  I suggest that Clean my Mac is not needed and you might delete that as well.  Third party 'cleaning apps' have generally been found to be ineffective and often cause problems with MBPs.

thanks that seem to have resloved the upset, Now how do i get back the wide sound I used to have with my old mac book pro using snow leapord ?

If you dont mind me asking. Thanks for that advice , I have saved it for fututre problems if any.

Resurrect your old MBP and listen to it.    The fact is what you are describing I have never experienced on any of my three MBPs, even with the oldest when it had Leopard or Snow Leopard.  The sound on all my MBPs has always been 'utilitarian' at best.

I checked my 2010 MBP System Preferences which has Snow leopard on it.  I saw no such setting available.  Sadly my 2006 MBP which has Leopard on it is not feeling well so I cannot see what setting it may have in that regard.  I simply cannot answer that question.

HA HA Sorry to bother you , just found this http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1432  at the bottom of the page is what i was on about , however , i cannot find it , Edit , in what ?

    To adjust the Sound Enhancer:

Depending on your individual tastes, you can use the Sound Enhancer to enrich your sound quality.

Sound Enhancer increases the perceived “wideness” of the stereo effect by modifying bass and treble response.

    1. Choose Edit > Preferences, and click Playback.
    2. Make sure Sound Enhancer is selected.
    3. To increase or decrease the effect of the Sound Enhancer, drag the slider.

That is the iTunes Equalizer. Since the sound quality of the MBPs speakers is so poor, I have always left on 'flat' but you certainly can alter the sound with it.  I am pleased you found it.  When in iTunes, OPTION COMMAND 2 opens it.
