Q: I have an IBook G3 900mhz 14 inch screen and can't  access the Internet

This is making me crazy. I never had a problem getting on the Internet before Videotron wifi. I have taken the iBook, today, to McDonalds-no problem, to our shopping center-no problem, so I know air port is working. When I called Videotron support I got a lot nothing in the way of help. As the iPad works, the iPhone works it must be my iBook.

I see that the Videotron wireless router uses a different encryption: WPA2-PSK and my only choice on the iBook is WPA Personal; that this might be the problem.

Do you think this is the problem? If yes, can I change the iBook?

Does anyone know how to reset the D-Link router to match the iBook?

Please help!

iBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

The issue is the WPA2 in your Videotron wireless router (the PSK is okay as that is the same as "Personal").

The original Airport card in your iBook G3 can only go up to WPA.

You would need an Airport Extreme card for WPA2.

    (see the System Requirements)

Can you configure your router for WPA or maybe a WPA/WPA2 combo setting?

I haven't played with a D-Link router.  I'm assuming that is what you were using before.  What model is it?  If it worked before (as WEP or WPA) it seems like it should still work.  Try configuring it to WPA.

    Hi Ivan,

Thanks for the info. I thought that was the problem, but could not find any data. I think my choices now are:

    1. Find an AirPort Extreme card for my iBook

    2. Purchase a USB wifi adapter that works with OS 10.4.6

    3. Purchase a used MacBook

I'm tending toward a MacBook. I am retired now and can't spend a lot of money so please advise on which used Intel model would give me the best cost/benefit.

On the router that the iBook works on, it is a Router provided by Bell United States in our cottage in Florida and it is supposed to be equivalent to the D-Link but we are home now so I don't know the model. I can use my iBook here in Rivière -du- Loup at McDonalds the shopping center, etc. Just not with the new Videotron D-link Router. Videotron has the router locked so I can not access the router's web page to change the encryption. Additionally, Videotron doesn't want to do this for me or give me the password so I can change it.

Thanks, a really big thanks. Also, I wanted to give 10 points but hit the wrong button, sorry, I'll try to change it.

I agree, getting a used MacBook or MacBook Pro is probably your best bet.

Option 1 is not an option.  Airport Extreme cards are physically different cards and won't even fit.

    Option 2 not sure about

Option 3 sounds good to get an updated unit.

Even though this is a portable computer, how portable do you need to be?  The cheapest solution is to connect to the router with an Ethernet cable.  If you need to be in a different room, the next cheapest might be to use an Airport Express as an Ethernet to wireless bridge.  The Express would connect to the wireless network and the iBook would connect to it with Ethernet.  This assumes the iBook is still working for you.

    Hi Ivan,

Great advice from you, as always. Yes, I have an iPad 2 with a Bluetooth keyboard that I got as a retirement gift. I am using it now. I have a lot of music on the iBook, more than I can keep on the iPad also my wife uses the iPad and my iPhone screen is too small for my old eyes to read for long. But the truth be known: I like my iBook a lot and don't want to give it up. Replacement is ok.

I think that the the Airport express is the answer!!! I 'll look for a used one today

    Many thanks, Bill
