Q: I want to get some software from the Apps Store

I have a 27"iMac networked to a 21"iMac. The first is on Snow Leopard and the other is on Lion. On the 27" I have Pages and Numbers as part of iWorks. I would like to put these two Apps on to the 21" from the 27", Am I allowed to migrate the said Apps from one to the other - or - do I buy them again? And - if I do how do I stop the bought App loading to my 27" when I want it for the 21"? Seems to me I'll end up with pile of bought Apps on the 27" instead of some on the 21"

And - the 21" is a not very old Mac but, a resale from someone or other. I don't know the password. I enter that used for the 27" but it keeps asking for the password. But how am I supposed know that - or change it - or get a new one. I have gone through the various steps for "hours" today - now locked out. So what to do?

No migration necessary. You can re download apps from the App Store on each computer.

"Apps from the Mac App Store may be used on any Macs that you own or control for your personal use."  > Mac App Store: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FYI ...  The minimum requirements for Pages from the App Store is v10.7.4 or later.

Same for  Numbers. So those two applications will not run Snow Leopard.

To view this information, open the App Store. Then from the menu bar click Store > Sign In

Then locate the Pages or Numbers app. You will see Requirements under Information right side of the window.

As for the admin password. When buying a used Mac, it's rule of thumb to obtain the install discs. Without that, you can't change the admin password.

Carolyn - Thanks so much - I was given the Install disks and the iMac has had a complete overhaul. I am planning now to upgrade my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and the 21" to Mountain Lion, too.

Thanks for your help - most appreciated

Where did the iWorks apps come from? Did you buy Pages and Numbers from the Mac App Store with Snow Leopard at some point in the past? Or are these two apps from a retail install disk for iWorks?

When I bought my new 27" iMac I asked that iWorks 09 be put on - this gave me Numbers, Pages and Keynote. However I never got any disk or bought it via Apps Store - I just asked the Mac shop in our city to put iWorks on when they prepared the iMac for despatch to me. I have Snow Leopard on my iMac but am about to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

You may have iWorks 09 that predates the Mac App Store, in which case you do not own the MAS versions and would not be able to install the apps from the MAS.

There were 3 27" iMacs that came with OS X Snow Leopard installed from the factory; Late '09, Mid '10 and Mid '11. Which iMac model do you have?

I got mine about mid 2010

However, the iMac 11,1 model number identifies it as a Late '09 iMac. Do you ever recall updating either app through the MAS? Do they show up in the list of apps after you have signed into your account (Store menu) and visit the Purchases pane? Do you recall how much you paid for the iWork apps? Do you still have the original purchase receipt?

Sorry! I made an error. I do have the original sale paperwork and can answer your questions, thus : iWorks was sold to me and installed by the Mac store. When the iMac arrrived the iWorks install disk was in the consignment. The invoice shows the purchase of the iMac was dated 10th Aug 2010 and the cost (single user) of iWorks was $179.00 (that is New Zealand dollars) The iWorks package tells me this software was V9.0.3. Other things : the iMac also came with the Install disk for Final Cut Express, added RAM, Apple Care Protection and freight. The iMac cost $NZ3099.00 with all these other things additional - total cost in New Zealand dollars - $5118.58

So your iWorks is not the MAS versions and the End User License Agreement for the disk version likely does not allow the installation of the apps on a second iMac, unless it was a Family Pack. Which at that price, it could be, but you would need to locate the install disk to put the apps on the other Mac, however, since you intend to upgrade the Macs to Mt Lion, I don't know if that old version would even work on Mt Lion. The MAS versions of the iWorks apps are about US$20 plus tax each in the USA.

Thanks for your interest. I am right now downloading Mt Lion and I think you are right - I'm pretty sure iWorks from the disk won't work in Mt Lion. No worries I'll pay up and get Numbers & Pages through the Apps Store

    Cheers

If you don't want to have to download the Mt Lion installer a 2nd time for the other Mac, make a copy of it, like on an 8 GB thumb drive, because it self-deletes when it finishes the installation.

I have iWork '09 on disk and it works fine in Mountain Lion.
