Q: Finder crashes using Iomega Home Media Drive

I have a 2TB Iomega Home Media Drive, which I am able to connect to OK (unlike many it seems!) and, most of the time, it works!

BUT ... very often ... if I try to copy and paste a file from my Mac to the Iomega drive, it starts to copy but then crashes the Mac Finder (a window shows 'copy in progress' but nothing happens, and it cannot be cancelled).

Other applications on the Mac still work, but the processor seems to be mostly tied up trying to copy the file.

Once in this state, I cannot ust the normal 'Shut down' command as the Finder is busy.

So I have to use the 'crash stop' (hold the power button down for a few seconds).

This happens quite frequently, but not all the time by any means.

When it happens, the Iomega drive is sometimes disabled as well, but sometimes it seems to keep working OK.

I'm using Mac OS X Version 10.5.8, with an iMac G5 and a PowerMac G5.

Any ideas please?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), also PowerMac G5

How is that drive connected, and how was it formatted?

Hi Klaus1, Thanks for your message.

    Sorry, I should have mentioned:

I'm connecting via a Cat 5 Ethernet network.

The Iomega is a network drive, and is connected via Cat 5 to my router, as is the Mac.

The drive came pre-formatted to NTFS, with a built in 'management system' on the drive (so I was reluctant to consider re-formatting it!).

Sometimes it works fine. But sometimes not!

And I never seem to have problems copying from the Iomega to the Mac.

Only when copying to the Iomega drive.

    Thanks for your assistance.

If you are not running Windows, why did you not format it for for Apple OS X, i.e. HFS Extended (Journaled)?

    Thanks again for your message.

Firstly, I am running Windows as well.

My network feeds several Windows computers (Win XP / Vista) as well as 2 Mac's (OX X 10.5.8).

I was not aware of or expecting any issues with the formatting of the drive.  Iomega claim that it can be used with both Windows and Mac computers, without any 'modification'.

So there was no reason to consider a 're format'.

They do suggest installing their 'Iomega Storage Manager' on local devices to help with 'discovery'.

    " .... Iomega Storage Manager

optionally installed on your local computer, it discovers any Iomega storage devices on your subnet, maps device Shares to computers, and provides local access to your content. It provides access to Shares through your computer's file management program, such as Windows Explorer or Mac Finder, allowing you to drag and drop many files between your computer and the Home Media Network Hard Drive.

Installing the Iomega Storage Manager is optional.

    ...."

I did try this on one Mac, but it made no difference that I could see.

The drive also came 'pre loaded' with a network/drive management system (for setting up & managing the 'Shares' etc., and various other functions).

Any sort of re-format process would (presumably?) have destroyed this system.

It sounds like you believe that the formatting is the issue here, but I don't really understand why that should be.

Or whether use with both Windows and Mac changes that position?

Is NTFS really not compatible with Mac OS X?

    Thanks again for your help.
