What you describe are symptoms of a failed display or display connection. Take it to an Apple store for a free genius bar evaluation. You will be told what the repair cost will be and then make an informed decision.

Thank-you for the information. I tried all the steps to no avail i'm afraid so I am going to have to take him to either an Apple store or AASP when I get a chance. I'll re-post when I find out what the problem is, thanks again
