Q: Problems with SMB and file sharing in Lion

Hi everyone,

I use a mac mini 2011 running Lion Server 10.7.5, we are three clients using both mac and pc, and we use SMBup.

Everything works fine except one little problem on sharing folders... 

When a user create a new file (mac or pc), he's the only one who gets writing permission in that file. But people can, rename, move or delete the file, they just can't work in it...

I have to go on the server, and, in the shared folder properties, Apply permissions to subfolders. Then everyone has the permissions until someone makes some changes in the file, then he is the only one with writing permissions again...

I can't find a lead, and Apple Care doesn't want help if I use SMBup...

I hope that's clear and someone can help (excuse for my english...)

I try this solution which seems to work :

sudo chmod -R +a "nameofthegroup allow list,add_file,search,delete,add_subdirectory,delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,

writeextattr,readsecurity,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/SharedFolder

Using OS X Mountain Lion server and having problems with the HP network scanning version of SMB I found this solution which fixed my problem.

Just installed SMBUP is working fine but I can only share 1 folder.

smbup accept other folders but on my mediaplayer (wd tv live) I see ony 1 folder...

Reset done, save, other folders reboot nothing helps

After updating our entire office to Mountain Lion, we lost scan to folder capability from our multifunction printer/scanner for everyone. Ricoh support provided a link to this thread as their solution. I downloaded and installed the current version of SMBUp. But I am at a loss as to what to do next. My lack of technical expertise prohibited me from attempting the manual installation method. I found where to start Samba and now SMBUp says Samba is active. What next? I'm afraid I need more detailed instructions as to the process involved. I looked at the websites linked to on your site, but they didn't offer any clarity. Let me know if you can help.

SMBUp not the way to go. Apple provides a printer / scanner utility that operates from the computer (it "calls" the printer rather than the other way around). This allows you to name folders / documents on the fly, including adding to existing documents.

Steve, which Ricoh device are you referring to as age of the machine will determine if the firmware can be upgraded?  There are a number of firmware updates available that will enable scanning from Lion and Mountain Lion.  Your Ricoh service provider should be able to download those from the www.my-ricoh.com website and apply to your machine.  I've just done the same for a 3 year old MP C2800.

bj110, thanks for the response. We have the Ricoh Aficio MP 9000, which was introduced in 2006. Our sales/support staff simply stated the scan to folder function stopped working as of OS X Lion and they were not aware of any intent to remedy the situation by Ricoh. But, if you know something different, I am all ears. Meanwhile, I will check with them to see if there is a firmware update they can apply. I believe they said this model uses the older technology that can't be updated to work with the new system, though.

Unfortunately, my multifunction scanner is not supported. So it doesn't look like Image Capture, etc. is an option. Do you have another solution?

So sick of reading pages and pages of stuff and not really finding any soloution at all, dam all my windows box's just flipping work (no bull*8it messing about at all)...............

I am trying to scan from Kyocera 3060 using SMBUp. I am using Mountain Lion.  I have double checked all my settings and continue to get connection errors.   I do get this error message from SMBUp in manage users when I set up the user.

"User has more than 15 groups assigned to it by Mac OS X. This has been known to cause problems with this implementation of Samba when run under OS X Lion. You will be able to create the account, but access may not be possible until some of the group accesses are removed. Alternatively, consider using a different user account or creating ad-hoc accounts just for file sharing."

I have only 3 accounts setup on my MAC.

You'll find that if you talk to any manufacturer about problems with their machines, the first thing they will ask or sometimes even insist on is that you've applied all the latest firmware before they offer to help.  Quite often, but not necessarly every time this will sort out the problem.  It is however important to bear in mind they are under no obligation to support newer technology, like newer Operating Systems which would not have been available when their machines were launched.  You can only upgrade an old machine so much, and sometimes you may have to accept that your machine cannot be upgraded anymore.

It's highly likely that any machine older than 3-4 years is unable to support the new version of SMB and I've found this to be the same with Windows 8 (Pro as well as home Premium).  I work in the office equipment industry and this problem is happening more often now that people are upgrading their computers (Mac as well as Windows), but insist on keeping their old printer/scanners etc.

There are other ways round it though, other than trying to modify your new OS.  You can try to scan to email if you have an in-house mail server, of if you don't have one of those, just create a new Gmail account, find the server details on the web and use that.  Failing this method, you can use an older Mac or PC that supports the older version of SMB and scan to a shared folder on that.  I've even managed to do it on a 10 year old PC, replaced Windows with Ubuntu Linux to speed it up and using Samba scanned to a folder on that. 

The newer Macs or PCs can connect over the network and get the scanned files that way.  I know it's a slightly more akward way of doing it, but if you can create an automatic script with say Apple's Automator to pull the file from the older computer, you'll get the same result. That actually turned out to be the case for us. We have a 7 year old Ricoh printer. Ricoh had an OS X 10.8 firmware update for our printer, but for some reason word of it wasn't getting down to our local Ricoh dealer. I ended up getting someone from Ricoh to send me the links to give to our dealer tech who applied them and got our scan-to-folder functionality back just like before. The one new step was we had to enter a username and password for each Mac that had a folder in the printer setup. No SMB required.

Try to get the newest drivers from the manufacturer. With any luck they work either without SMB or with OSX's SMB implementation.

If that's no luck you can use SMBUp but, as you can see, SMBUp is facing problems with OSX's use of nested groups for users.

A workaround is to create a sharing-only user in the accounts tab, then create the same user for Samba through the terminal:

/opt/local/bin/smbpasswd -a newusername

/opt/local/bin/smbpasswd -e newusername

With this you're creating a user with less than 15 groups that will work with Samba in your system. You can then share the folders you wish with this username and password. If the folder is elsewhere in your hard disk you can Get Info from the finder and make sure the new user name is added to it.
