Every time I launch Keynote 5.3, I get the spinning beach ball of death.  The only other user-space applications running are Mail, Safari, Mint and Preview.  Even shutting these off makes no difference.  This is the only Mac I have this problem on.  Every other system I use Keynote on works fine.  I've tried deleting preferences, turning off iCloud, uninstalling and reinstalling, repairing permissions, repairing disk, etc.  Nothing seems to fix the problem.  I have to force quit the app every time.  I've used prior versions and never had this problem.  I can't get anything done and am quite frustrated.

Try this maintenance procedure for keynote which has solved many issues.

Every stage must be completed in performed in the following order:

    1

    Close all iWork applications

    2

Uninstall all the iWork applications; this must be done with an application remover tool to delete the installation properly. Appcleaner is known to work correctly for this purpose, it is free and can be downloaded from here: Appcleaner Download

    3

    empty the trash

    4

shutdown the Mac and restart. After the start up chime, hold down the shift key until the apple logo appears

let the Mac complete the start up procedure completely, it will take longer than usual as the hard drive is being repaired

    5

go to;   Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility > First Aid > Repair Disc Permissions

when this is completed restart the Mac normally

    6

Reinstall iWork or Keynote as appropriate using the original discs or logging into the Mac App Store and installing from there

    Post back on your results.

This was useful advice, but it didn't work.  I'm down to thinking my profile has a problem because logging in as Admin resulted in no Keynote problems.  Thanks for the advice, though.
