Q: MacBook Pro constantly losing wireless connectivity

Hi folks,

Well, I read a ton of posts regarding MacBook Pro wireless networking issues before buying a wireless router last month, and now it's "me too."

Our iBook has no problems whatsoever with dropped connections, but the MBP loses access every few minutes or so. I usually follow a sequence of "Turn AirPort Off"/"Turn Airport On" to cycle the connection, and sometimes this works. It's an almost constant problem. This is a standard configuration MBP.

The router happens to be a D-Link DIR-615, but I've seen enough posts about problems with the Airport Express and MacBook Pros to know it's not the router that's the problem--it's the MacBook Pro (I notice a few similar posts even on the first page of this forum).

Dear Apple: what are you doing about this issue?

Has anyone else somehow resolved this problem? If there was only a couple of posts about this issue, then it might be written off as problems with a specific router, or specific users. But when there's a ton of messages all complaining about the same problem, then it's more likely a significant defect that needs to be fixed by the manufacturer, and won't be fixed by standard troubleshooting procedures of the mundane kind (Tech Support Theater: "Is your router turned on?").

Dear Apple: where are you?

MBP, Mac OS X (10.4.11), non

What do you mean you "removed the network"? Rescanning the wireless and your network should show up again since it is available. If your "location" does not include WiFi, you just add a new location or add wifi to the location you have in the networks settings.

yep you can add me to the long list of former mac fans who are experiencing this problem with what was going to be my new fave gadget and is fast becoming nothing more than a glorified DVD player.

Spoke to apple care support and they advised me to do a time machine backup then erase hard drive and restore from the time machine back-up. Just a couple of thing s have bugged me about this process:

    1. erasing hard drive and re-installing OS  is reliant on a good solid internet connection .....which is the whole problem- i aint got one

    2. re-installing something new then backing it up with something old seems daft as well like re-introducing an infection to a freshly sterilised wound.

Hmmmmmmmm, methinks i might take it back to the shop

2 days ago my wireless connection also started to act up and I found this thread.

For me, deleting the files below & rebooting worked (so far ):

    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

    com.apple.network.identification.plist

    com.apple.smb.server.plist

    NetworkInterfaces.plist

    preferences.plist

    fyi: I am running 10.8.4 on a 13-inch, Mid 2012 MBP.

    HI Suave -

I think you can purchase the warranty for up to a year after your original purchase.  You might be able to 'wrangle' with them though.  If you have any trouble, call Apple Corporate, Customer Relations.  They have the authority to do a lot (I got an extra year of warranty because of all my documented problems - in addition to a new MBP.  The wifi is better on the new one, but still major issues:  in different parts of house, when I travel, for no reason, etc.)

    Best - L

    2dutch,

This is my first Apple laptop, starting to hate it and dreading switching to it. Could you please tell me where I go to delete these threads that helped you so much?

    Thanks!

    Savannah

    /Library/Preferences/System Configuration

You can make a backup if you want, but I simply deleted them and rebooted.

Hope it works for you as well :)

I don't know how to find the location -

I typed /Library... etc. and nothing came up - (sorry - I am admittedly hopeless in this area !)

I have a Retina Macbook Pro 2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. I had the same wifi connection drop issue. My wifi connection would drop at random times which was very annoying. I tried many solutions from here and there, all over the internet, well nothing worked.

I am not sure if this will work for others. Recently I got my internet speed upgraded (not to fix this issue). Because of which I had to upgrade my modem to a Motorola SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 and upgrade my router to ASUS RT-N66R N900. I had a Netgear RangeMax WNR1000 Router earlier which I had for 3 years. Well I have been using this setup for 2 days now and I have not seen any wifi connection drops in those 2 days. I am not sure if this had resolved the issue. But I will still monitor it for few more days.

Last Mac I ever buy, had this issue since I bought it over a year ago. $1500 for a pile of junk, my wife has a $500 windows laptop which never gets diconnected.  Tried all the delete this and rebuild this thread! NO LUCK....

    Sorry Apple, but you suck.

2dutch solution worked for me on 2012 Macbook Pro Retina.  To recap:

Open Finder and navigate to this directory:

    /Library/Preferences/System Configuration

    Delete these files:

    com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

    com.apple.network.identification.plist

    com.apple.smb.server.plist

    NetworkInterfaces.plist

    preferences.plist

    Restart machine.

Actually, I deleted all the files in the directory (not just the above 5 files).  Current wifi connection has not dropped in over 24 hours.

The only thing that has helped me has been to go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced and check Require administrator password to: Turn AirPort on or off.

    Dropouts have greatly diminished.

I am using an early Intel MacBook Pro 1.833GHz Intel Core Duo OS X 10.6.8.  I had replaced the stock 802.11g card with an 80211n card from eBay and was having the same dropout problem with both. My iPod and iPad have always worked well with my home netwook and a nearby cable wifi. My macBook Pro is set for WPA personal.
