Q: Aperture 3.4.5. Preview pictures solid black

In browser view pictures appear as black rectangles. This has happened with imports since 18 August. Full size pictures appear as expected. This looks like a bug to me. Anyone else seen this or can explain it?

What else happened on August 18? Have you imported new images? Did you upgrade or install new software? What is your current Aperture 3 version? Are your originals raw or jpegs? Where is your Aperture library stored? On an external drive or the internal system drive?

And are only new imported images blackened out or all thumbnails?

The first thing I'd try is to rebuild the thumbnails: Select all images in the browser and use the command "Photos > Generate Thumbnails".

If your originals are raw, try "Photos > Reprocess Original", if you updated Aperture.

If all fails, try tor repair your Aperture library:

    Hi thanks for helpful reply.

    • August 18 halfway through import the images went black
    • Upgrade question, don't know really, I just tend to use software update unless I've heard of any problems
    • Current version is 3.4.5
    • Files are jpegs
    • aperture library on internal sytem drive
    • Only new imports are black

A little more research has thrown up the following:

    • If I try to email the black version the recipient gets a black rectangle
    • Significantly if I import the images to a folder and then import them into Aperture, the Aperture browser view is fine and everything else works
    • Following your suggestion to generate thumbnails the thumbnails appear !!

So I guess i have a workaround, well two actually, but it's still a bit weird and a buggy looking situation

    regards

does the same happen, if you import images into a new Aperture library? Create a new, empty library for testing. (Launch Aperture with the ⌥-key held down, and select other/new).

    Hello,

I have seen this in iPhoto when there was not the correct color space applied. It most offten happened with B&W photos. For me I brought the photos into Photoshop Elements changed the color space to sRGB, copied them to iPhoto they were then visible in iPhoto.

Though I did not have that issue with Aperture it is something to consider. Does this also occur in iPhoto, what color space is your camera set to? Does not occur in iPhoto? If you are on the latest version of Mac OS, iPhoto, and Aperture, the good news is they both, iPhoto and Aperture, use the same library. In the past they were separate. So, bringing photos successfully to iPhoto, close iPhoto then open Aperture those photos should appear the same as in iPhoto.

Also, you could do maintenance on your Aperture library. Close Aperture, hold both the Option and Command keys down, launch Aperture, when the dialog box appears release the keys run the maintence. For each one you will need to close then again relaunch Aperture holding down both keys, move to the next maintenance.

    Cordially,

    Hi Léonie

One of your posts solved my question I just clicked on the wrong one!!

New library worked fine then I repaired the Aperture database and so far the issue seems to have gone, Imports in the browser view are not black and I can mail pictures as attachments.

Thanks for your help, all the way from Alaska!!!

Thanks also to Ric for replying and suggesting a similar route of repairing the library
