In both occasions, internet recovery and recovery HD, the OS is downloaded from Apple's Servers once you verify with your AppleID.

So lets think about this scenario. You have a MBP 2011 and your HDD completely fails. It had 10.7 preloaded. You change your HDD. Based on what you say, you are screwed because there is no OS on the Drive, and you don't have the USB Stick that was shipped with RETAIL versions of 10.7

Internet Recovery is there for these circumstances. At this point, the OP has both HD recovery, and Internet recovery, just the default Macintosh HD Partition has been wiped.

Internet, Online, recovery only works on systems the originally came with Lion or Mt Lion. Also on some of the 2010 models, the later 2010 versions which I think is the Mid 2010 models, with a Firmware update you can use Internet Recovery but you will also need the Original Apple ID and password that was used to buy Lion, and now Mt Lion, for that system and or for another Mac you own.

The OP Really need the Original system discs. And so do you IF your used Mac originally came with Snow Leopard.

Without the original system disc, for systems that came with Snow Leopard or an earlier version of OS X, there is NO way to install the normally included iLife apps that come with every Mac without buying them again. Whether or not you are able to install a newer version of OS X.

Im not saying he can bypass the AppleID verification. He will either activate 10.7 and then continue installing with HIS AppleID, or he will boot from the 10.8 USB Disk which will again ask him for his AppleID, but since he has bought this it will accept it again.

As i said before, the DVD might take some time, it's up to the OP to decide whether he wants to go with it or not.

Edit: I dont really need them to be honest. Since i got the ability to boot from recovery HD/Internet Recovery, I haven't experienced any issues through out these 2 years. And I have re-installed several times.

    Sorry I misread your post.

If you have a Late 2011 Mac notebook model, or later model like the mid 2012s, that Came with Lion Pre-installed from the factory and the HDD fails and you replace it. You then use the Online Internet Recovery system to Reinstall Lion. Same it true for the "Late" Early 2011 MBPs that came with Lion Pre-installed as there are quite a few of them as Lion was release in June or July of 2011 and all system manufactured after Lion came out were shipped with Lion Pre-Installed and the firmware set to use the Online internet Recovery system and reinstall Lion.

On all those system Lion ( and now Mt Lion that comes Preinstalled) is Tied To the Machine and Not to any particular, individual, User and or Apple ID.

With all those system when you use the Online internet recovery system you do not need to enter a Apple ID to download and install the originally shipped version of OS X. As stated it is tied to the Machine.

If he does not have another Mac and that he bought Lion for with his own Apple ID he can not buy Lion or Mt Lion with without having a Mac system that can Log on to the Mac App Store.

I am Not sure if it can be done from any other Apple device by logging into the iTunes store or the iOS App store.

I think the only place you can buy, download and install Lion or Mt Lion is from the "Mac" App Store and then only from a "Mac" Computer. As you can NOT log in to the Mac Computer App Store from any other Apple device.

Just like you can't login to or buy iOS Apps from a Mac computer. You must hjave an Apple iOS device to do that.

The iTunes store, completely separate from the "iOS" App store and the "Mac" App store, can be logged into from any Apple device as all Apple devices can download and play music, some can play movies and Podcasts.

We are saying the same thing.

Now the OP is in a situation where he DOES have access to both recovery and internet recovery. IF he wants to wait 2 weeks, or more or less, he may very well do so. Other than that he can just pay and get 10.7/10.8, and as i mentioned on an earlier post is that he WILL need access to a Mac to sort it out.

He has Access to internet recovery to reinstall Lion or Mt Lion but Only if he has an Apple ID that has Already bought Lion or Mt Lion. Which I don't think he ever did buy either of those version of OS X. So in that case he can NOT reinstall either of them.

Yes if he knows someone that has a Mac he could open the Mac App store, Log out from the Apple ID for that Mac owner, Create his own Apple ID, Buy Mt Lion (Or Lion after contacting Apple and getting redemtion code EMAILed to His Apple ID email address) Then Download the OS and make a USB thumb drive installer.

Those are a bunch of IF and Maybe's.

But then he Still Would NOT have the iLife Apps.

We are Not saying the same thing.

If we were this conversation would of ended many posts ago.

If he buys Lion he will NOT need the USB thumb drive because he already has 10.7 recovery on the Mac. It will Download the OS for him.

If you have a Mac in front of you, running 10.8 try and reinstall without an internet connection. You can also try and verify your AppleID and then disconnected. IF you then manage to install 10.8 without an active internet connection, you sir win the Internets.

Also AppleCare will NOT offer to send him a free copy of iLife Apps. They will jsut send him the OS INstallation DVD.

    Shootist007,

You are 100% CORRECT. I followed your directions and Lion is installed fine. I used my Apple ID, which I used previously to purchase MT Lion, and updated my Mac App store purchases. MT Lion without a problem.

I think I may be having the same problem...or something simlar.

I purchased a used 2010 iMac, which the seller didn't wipe.  I did that but ran into a roadblock because they had updated to 10.7, Lion.  So I purchased 10.8 and made a bootable USB drive on my MacBookPro.  Was able to boot the iMac up with that and proceeded to install 10.8.  The install seemed to finish, but stalled at the Apple logo screen and has a spinning wheel.  It sat like this for about 4 hours, so I tried to turn it off and restart.  No luck.  Same screen.

Cant boot in Safe Mode (holding Shift while turning on).  When I boot in Startup Manager (holding Option while turning on), I am able to verify the disc in Disk Utility.  Also "repaired" it, just because.  When I restarted, I am back to the same Apple logo screen with spinning wheel.

    Any ideas?

if you have a macbook pro late 2011 model that according to this website it shipped w/ lion OS 10.7.2 on it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159#MacBook_Pro

this being said regardless of whether you bought it from someone else or not, lion is the original OS for the model therefore you are entitled to that download of the OS.

contact applecare and give them the serial number of the mac, they will then be able to assign the lion OS and the ilife apps that are part of it to your apple id so you are able to complete the installation of the OS.

    this should resolve your issue

Shootist007 u are right man cuz , I called to the apple support center they told me that the only possibility to make ur mac working is to buy a mac lion osx to appstore or nearest local store than activate license they send to you, after that the apple id u bought a mac osx is going to work (they say) , but I dont wanted to give them any money cuz when I bought my mac he camed with osx installed on it and we have our rights to do updates without giving anything like  miscrosoft have done over the years with costumers , apple privacy ***** .
So people if u restored ur mac and than for installing osx u have been asked for apple id , dont be scared and u dont have to buy a new copy of mac osx just

    Press Command-R during startup

Start from the OS X Recovery System1

and this screen is going to appear http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/  after the procces finishes u have to follow just standard steps to install mac osx .

PS. APPLE U HAVE TO CHANGE UR PRIVACY TO KEEP COSTUMERS ON YOUR BRAND .
WHAT WE HAVE TO PAID AGAIN FOR SOMETHING WE DID BEFORE .

I had a problem similar to this, for ten months I tried to remedy it on my own. then I remembered I had a Mac OS X Snow Leopard upgrade disc. I inserted the disc, unplugged my mac (before it spit the disc out), pressed and held the 'C' key on my keyboard. Not one hour later was running Snow Leopard on my Mac. I'm now going to see if I can install Maverick. 10 months I wasted.
