Q: Printer problems Mountain Lion

I have an up to date iMac.  I have one printer attached by USB and another on my network.  When I first started up the iMac, it identified both printers and set them up faultlessly.  However, over the weekend I have suddenly lost the ability to print to my network printer.  The computer cannot "find" it although it is still there on the network and I did not use my computer over the weekend.

I deleted the printer and set it up again using a generic setting.  That allowed the computer to talk to the printer but I could not get the paper sizes recognised.  I therefore followed advice online and turned the printer off, deleted it again, and then re-installed it from the drop down box (that seemed to recognise its existence at that stage.  It took a longtime to download the relevant software but then everything seemed set up as it was originally.  EXCEPT ... we were back to square one with the computer not being able to find the printer.

Short of clearing everything, turning everything off and back on again, and reinstalling everything, I am at a loss to know what has gone wrong or how to put it right.  Any ideas?
