Q: unsupported image format bug

Hello

I'm using Aperture 3.4.5 on an iMac, 10.8.4, etc, and importing images from a Canon T3i -- usually but not always RAW. Until this week it worked like a charm.

Now, each project I import causes the images to be labeled "unsupported image format" with a black field and white triangle with an exclamation point. If I go to light table view the previews look fine, but as soon as I click to bring up an image it's corrupted.

The Canon DPP utility CAN see the images, as can Photoshop CS6. Older images (same camera, etc) prior to the last couple of imports are fine. So the images aren't corrupted, Aperture is having a problem.

I've repaired permissions within Aperture and by using Disk Utility. I've repaired the library and then rebuilt it. Each time the problem comes back.

My iMac has all software updates applied; I don't think I've had a Canon update for RAW formats, and the T3i has been around quite a while.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance,

Steve

Until this week it worked like a charm.

Steve, what happened since last week? Did you install anything else? Moved your Aperture library to a different locatio? Upgraded any other software?

As a test: Can you process your Canon pictures, when you are working from a different user account? For example the gust account?  If yes, I'd suggest to remove the raw decode presets:

         From your User Library remove

    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Raw Decode Presets.plist

If working from another user account does not help, I'd try to reinstall Aperture.

Thanks for the response. Did not install anything else, did not move Aperture library, no other upgrades.

Here's what I've done: thinking that perhaps the Canon software (e.g., DPP) might be an issue I deleted all of that. I then rebuilt the Aperture library and closed it without clicking anything. I then duplicated my Aperture Library to an external drive. Then I deleted Aperture and all of its preferences files and application support files that I could fine. I then did a cold restart, and when the system came up I reloaded Aperture (3.4.5) from the App Store. All that went well.

I went to another user (my 'Test' user with admin privileges), started Aperture, pointed to that library, and tried to load the images in question.

Same darned problem. Black image with the triangle and 'unsupported format' each time.

    So I'm stuck.

The images in question aren't vital; I was playing around with a new lens. But until I identify the problem I'm very concerned about uploading any new images to Aperture.

    Any other ideas?

Oh, one more thing -- egad.

I did install CS6 about a month ago. By any chance is that an issue?

Check to see if you guys did the 4.08 RAW update over the last few days.. Seems there are a lot of problems related to that upgrade..

Check here this is one example of one of the issues and how to go back to 4.07 to check and see if it reverts back to working..

    Bang! You got it!

And an apology to leonif DF -- of course when I said I had not installed anything recently, I didn't even think about Apple updates pushed to me. Cheez, I'm a dummy.

    So here's what worked:

    1 -- navigated to /System/Library/CoreServices

    2 -- trashed RawCamera.bundle and RawCameraSupport.bundle

    3 -- restart

    4 -- downloaded RAWCameraUpdate4.07 from Apple

    5 -- installed that

    6 -- launched Aperture

7 -- opened the Project that had a problem

    Success!

The munged images in Aperture are now vvvvery interesting.

If I manipulated them before and got the black box with triangle, they STILL have that displayed. BUT if I duplicate them, the duplicate is fine and can be manipulated without fear.

If I did NOT manipulate them before, they are fine now.

By the way, the munged images could be opened and viewed properly by Photoshop CS6, Preview, etc, and displayed their thumbnails properly in Finder when I navigated to my Aperture library.

Thank you both for your help!

One more question: how might I report this (politely, of course) to Apple? Seems like the RAW 4.08 has an issue.

Great, that it is working again

Use the "Provide Aperture Feedback" link in Aperture's main menu bar:

    Aperture >  Provide Aperture Feedback

Just got back from a family trip and simply wanted to download our vacation photos and show them to the family on Apple TV.  Once again the buggy Apple Aperture turned what should have been a fun evening with the family into hours alone in the office looking through forum posts and trying work arounds.  So much for "user experience."

I did all of these steps twice and still had the same issue, and the issue for me is much deeper than simply not displaying images properly.

Only some of the photos that I imported from a Rebel T3i in RAW did not display properly.  It appears to be very random which ones show and which ones are unsupported - they were all shot in exactly the same format.  The photos that are not supported are showing as 900 x 600 and only .5 MB in Aperture and it appears that none of the photos that I imported BEFORE the update show as unsupported, and they were all shot in the exact same RAW format.

After following all of the steps above, and still having the same problem, I decided to see if re-importing the photos would help.  After following the steps above now NONE of the approximately 500 photos on my memory card are recognized by Aperture.  Aperture sees it as a blank card.  In finder, if I remove the memory card and insert it directly into the iMac, Finder will allow me to navigate to the photos.

So, this only worked for me after I rebuilt the library as a final step.  Now all of the photos display correctly without having to re-import them; however, some of the preview thumbnails show as black but will display the picture after opening it.  Aperture still does not recognize the photos on the memory card if it is in the camera.  Hopefully an update soon will fix these issues.

Thanks for the great info on this thread.

Same problem with Sony .ARW files. Up to now have been supported and now when I attempt to open they revert back to the dreaded Unsupported Image Format.

Will retrograde to 4.07 and mummer proper incantations.

I know this is a very late reply and you might not even use Aperture anymore. (I will stick with it until impossible.) However, since I have not found a solution anywhere else, I thought I would share my workaround.

Reimport the problem photos. This is particularly easy if you have referenced images - just navigate to the masters. Make sure to Uncheck "Do Not Import Duplicates". Then just lift from the corrupt versions and stamp the just imported ones. This works well for me.
