I have a late 2012 mac mini that I've been using headless since January, connecting to it via Screen Sharing from my 2010 MacBook Pro. It was OK, not great, but good enough. I mostly ssh'd to it from the MBP and really only used the browser on the mini for a few things that were really convenient to do from the browser on that machine.

I updated to 10.8.3 a few days ago, and since then when I Screen Share and open Firefox (19.0.2), the screen doesn't redraw properly, and I need to move the mouse across the screen to expose the content of the  page. Open a new page, go through the same procedure. When I connect a monitor to the mini, though, and use Screen Sharing, it's fine. I tried it with Safari, and it seems OK.

I did notice a little bit of this behavior on the entire screen (not just with Firefox) before the 10.8.3. update, but it was mostly limited to the edges and it didn't really bother me - I chalked it up to network or memory issues since sometimes I'm maxing out my 16Gb and pushing the CPU doing stuff for work.

I'll add just for the whole story that I do have VirtualBox on the mini that had a couple of ubuntu VMs loaded. Using the VM over Screen Sharing has always been a problem - I was only rarely able to successfully type text (like the login) into the VM terminal window...but I needed to SSH to the VM anyway since I do the rest of my work on the MBP.

The other thing to mention is these apps for my company that I'm using are all written in Java, which was also recently updated, IIRC.

I've seen the post about making a dummy dongle for the graphics display, but it seems odd to me that it only occurs (so far) with Firefox. However, having the graphics display connected does solve the problem.

I could switch to Safari for the rare times I use a browser on this machine, but I'm a) worried that there's some problem that I should address before it's out of warranty, and b) wondering what changed with the 10.8.3 update to make this stop working.

Thanks in advance for any advice or tips.

Hi, they did change a bunch if Video things in 10.8.3, though an anomoly, it doesn't sound like a Hardware problem that's going to shorten it's life though.

I have the same issue between two Macminis both running mountail lion 10.8.4

It affects mostly firefox. I can move the FF window and it updates everything. Otherwise,

only where I move the mouse. Very disconcerting

This is what I am expriencing, sharing the screen of my brand new headless mac-mini (2012, 16GB RAM) to my other mac-mini (2010, 16GB)

It happens to Firefox, VMware and other apps, but not all.

The symptom is that basically that the screen only redraws where the mouse is moved, unless I move the whole application window.

I tried the tricks with the miniDP-VGA dongle (resistor across pins red/red-gnd), the miniDP-DVI (1kOhm across pins 14+16) and all possible settings in the screen sharing etc.

    It just doesn not work.

Using Chicken of the VNC as VNC client is no better, it exhibits the same issues.

    This needs to be fixed

both mac-minis are running all the latest Mountail Lion 10.8.4...

I get the same corruption when screensharing from my macbook to my mac-mini...

I'm getting this exact problem too.

I originally had a Mac Pro server and didn't have this problem until I moved to a Mac Mini server. The Mac Mini was a fresh install restored from a Time Machine image of the Mac Pro.

I have tried installing a combo update and the usual repairs/fixes but to no avail. The only thing that stops the problem is running Firefox in safe mode (via Help / 'Restart with Add-ons Disabled...')

Sounds like it's a Mac Mini specific issue.

    I've worked out a solution...

If you run ScreenResX on your MacMini and set up a resolution profile to match your remote machine (ie. MacBook Air - 1366 x 768) then the remote res is the same as the local res and there is no graphical corruption in Firefox.

Screen Sharing will be much more responsive too as it doesn't have to scale the pixels on the fly to your remote machine.

This solved ALL of my Screen Sharing graphic corruption problems (incl. Firefox)

Here's an example of the profiles I set up in ScreenResX on my MacMini server to match my client screens...

I did try ScreenResX but was in a hurry and didn't have time to get it set up properly so I abandoned it pretty quickly. However, I wanted to update the thread to say the problem disappeared when I updated the MacMini to Mavericks. The mouse control is really slow, but FF works again.
