Q: all pictures are turning red in my library

Every picture in my library is turning red when I allow it to load as if it is going through some kind of filter. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remedy this problem. I didn't change any settings and old photos that have been uploaded for quite some time as well as newly imported photos are having the same problem. Not sure what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance,

Hi Wyatt.  The first thing we have to rule out is easy.  What do you mean by "turning red"?  If the red is just in blotches, and those blotches are in the highlights, then you have turned on "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas".  Toggle this off from the "View" menu (where you will also see the keyboard shortcut).

If that's not it, describe what you are seeing, and post a screenshot if you can.

Also: RAW? and have you recently upgraded to Apple RAW Compatibility 4.08?

Thank you for the quick response Kirby. I looked at the settings for hot and cold highlighting and that was not the issue. And yes the files are in raw and updated to the 4.08... The red is not in blotches. Almost the entire photo turns red other than dark areas which appear blue. Any other ideas as to what it could be?

Sure sounds like Highlight Hot and Cold Areas is on. Are you sure there is no check mark next to View->Hightlight Hot and Cold areas

I'm positive Frank. I've checked and re-checked those settings, but to no avail. All my pictures are still showing up red. Any other ideas on how to fix this problem?

Post a screen shot of the entire Aperture window with one of these images displayed. That might help sort this out.

One other thing to check is to make sure you don;t have Onscreen Proofing turned on (View->Onscreen Proofing). Given your description I doubt it's that but its worth a check.

here is the screen I'm stuck with. My pictures will show up normal for a brief second if I scroll to the next picture but once the picture has loaded it immediately mimmicks the above image for all my photos in aperture. And once I have allowed the image to load once it no longer shows up normal, but only shows up red.

That sure looks like Highlight Hot and Cold areas is on but as it is not (at least intentionally) I'd start by making a new empty library ad importing a few of these images into the new library to see if the problem occurs there.

If it does not, try repairing the affected library (Start Aperture with the command and option kesys held down, select repair library).

If the problem happens in the new library make a new user, log in as that user and run Aperture. Again import a few images and see if the problem occurs.

    Post the results back.

BTW what version of Aperture and the OS are you on?

I would trash your preferences file first. Directions on the Apple troubleshooting page. Can't provide a link right now.

UI problems are sometimes solved by trashing the prefs file.

Wyatt, do you have a raw fine tuning preset defined as camera default? Check the cogwheel in the Raw Fine Tuning brick in the Adjustments Panel, if a camera preset is set. Perhaps the preset has become corrupted.

If you recently installed a raw support update, have you tried to reprocess the raw? Photos > Reprocess original?

Sounds like an Apple problem with 4.08 and this Nikon. If you go back to 4.07 everything is fine.

Addition: The combo D90 and 4.08 plus your hardware is the problem (look here)http://www.apertureforum.de/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2371

    Send feedback to Apple!

I have the same problem. How do you revert to 4.07?

    Never mind, found it. Remove

    /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle

    /System/Library/CoreServices/RawCameraSupport.bundle

    and install 4.07
