Q: Very slow macbook pro and continuesly running fan.

I have the macbook pro version 10.8.4. Yesterday it became insanely slow, taking up to 20 seconds to open a tab or a document. In adition my fan runs continuesly. My CPU is 90 % idle and I have tried to reset Pram and SMC. It did not help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Best regards,

Martin

I don't think the problem is clear, even if the the machine runs faster on a new account. If the OP has a HDD, defrag would help this:

You know the loading sign on the mouse? The colourful thing, its going almost all the time. Whenever I click something. Cronic slowness.

Why is it no longer needed? Even with a journaled file system, the disk doesn't always store data contiguously.

If I am the clean up my user it will take me 2 years when the computer is this slow. I think I will load my documents to a storage device and reinstill the entire mac. Is that a good idea? And do you have any guides for that?

OS X defrags on the fly automatically, hence, there's no real need to defragment a drive unless it has very little free space or contiguous space is needed for Boot Camp partition or somthing similar that needs only a large amount of contiguous free space.

Actually, OS X does attempt to store all files over contiguous blocks.

It that due to the HFS+ file system? Out of curiousity...not to get off topic too much.

I don't see a Spotlight process reported in Etrecheck as a top process. As for the Google keynote item I have it on my system which is not running slowly, so I would not think that was the cause.

Since its working as normal now I will do some cleaning up. The fan is still running so that I can hear it. It did not do so before.I am afraid it will overheat if I place it in the cover and it keeps blowing hot air. Anything I can do to fix it?

Thank you very much for the help so far you guys I really appreciate it!

The fans always run. You can check to see how fast by installing iStat Menus 4.06 that you can use to monitor both temperatures and fan speeds. Idle should be around 2000 RPM.

Having read numerous posts about this I ended up taking my Late 2011 MBP to Apple genius bar.  They ran a test and discovered there was a software issue that was causing my MBP to run slow, and frustratingly it was intermittent, but too annoying.

They ended up scrubbing the hard drive and reinstalling Yosemite and it is like I HAVE A NEW COMPUTER!

Unfortunately I did not do a great job of backing up and alas I lost some home movie files which I thought were kept in iTunes.  Key lessons learned.

    1.  If you have a problem go to Apple

    2.  Make sure you back up everything.

    3.  The guy at Apple reckons Clean My Mac might have cause the problem.  (Who knows) But I am know reluctant to use it again.
