Q: My machine continually freezes up. What can I do about this?

I keep shutting down Safari and reboot but also Word is slow and email as well. I just get the rainbow circle of death. Is there some maintenance I should be doing? I run Onyx but it doesn't seem to help. This machine is only 2 years old. I expect more from a $2200 item.
