OK, it turns out Apple's official stand is that Bootcamp 5 does not support Win XP.  However, a quick web search reveals that many users have indeed installed Win XP on OSX 10.8 machines without Parrallels or Fusion, etc.  If this is so, how is it done?  Are these users installing an earlier version of Bootcamp?

Related question:  I have a retail version of Win XP.  Is it possible to install it without Internet Explorer?  Without other extraneous apps?

In OS X Mountain Lion, Boot Camp Assistant downloads the Boot Camp 4 or 5 drivers, depending if your Mac supports Boot Camp 5 or not. Also, you can download Boot Camp 4 from the Apple site > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630 There's no problem on installing Windows XP if you have Mountain Lion. Note that Late 2012 iMacs only support 64-bit Windows 7 and Windows 8 editions. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634

Microsoft doesn't let you install Windows XP without Internet Explorer. Download a different Internet browser after installing Windows

    Support ends in 2014.

XP is about 25 times more vulnerable than 8.1

If you found how on other sites... seems like that would be where (I have not seen much to that effect, and of course a VM is good for all but games, and games really today you have better memory management and access t o more RAM in a 64-bit environment.

Installed - but the way Apple has moved you probably are also forced to use Boot Camp 2.2 or 3.x
