Thanks for offering your suggestion.
I've tried blocking the spam email address through my desktop & gmail, but it didn't work. Whoever is sending me a text is doing it directly to my phone number from an email address.

Sounds like an iMessage, are the messages from someone you know?

No, I have no idea who this person is.
It's from an unknown email address; from a gmail account.
The texts are always the same: "hey"
Almost like baiting from spam.

I don't think that would be a good idea if it is spam.
From my understanding (and I could be wrong), if it is spam, and I send a reply, then whoever is spamming me will then know they have a viable number to start sending even more spam.

If they are using iMessage, which it sounds like they are, they already know it's a live # from the delivery receipt.
More than likely somone out there entered your # incorrectly and think they are chatting with someone else. I would just simply tell them they are calling the wrong #.
in iOS7, which is due shortly, you will be able to block users in iMessage. if you can wait...

Well, I'm relieved to hear that it's most likely a case of unintentional texting from a real person.
Also happy to know Apple is coming out with something that can help with blocking unwanted texts.
When I get another text from this person, I'll try asking the person to stop.
Fingers crossed this doesn't make it worse.

I have the same problem.
I have tried telling them that they have the wrong number.
They say 'sorry' but it continues.
The texts from these gmail accounts have started coming at one in the morning. I asked them to stop and exclude my number in future; not so friendly this time - and told them that they were harrassing me at that time in the morning.
They said 'sorry'. They've even shared photos with each other (and me) and seem to be youngsters.
The texts still continue. I'm at my wits' end. Gmail doesn't offer a way for me to report them.
Any ideas anyone? TIA

This is the exact problem I was dealing with.
I tried blocking the email through Verizon's spam email blocker, but it didn't work.
I always got the same response ("sorry") and it continued.
Finally I had my husband respond on my behalf. He wrote, "hey bud, this is the wrong number. We don't know you, stop texting this number. " I have no idea why this approach worked differently than my requests to stop, but it did. It doesn't make any sense. May be this really is just a situation in which some young bored kids like to text people to get a rise out if them for their own sick entertainment. Try the same response as we did, may be they'll finally move on.

We have tried every response known to (wo)man...they just can't be bothered to drop my number as they text each other a load of rubbish and exchange photos.
I'm forwarded their details to my phone provider's Spam Text service.

Update the iOS on your phone to iOS 7. You can block spam texts and iMessages directly on the phone.

I'm on IOS 7. I could only see (via Settings) to block my own contacts.
Just found a way to block them NOT via settings - without adding them to my friend list first - on IOS7, click on their names at the top of the message. Then click on the
Scroll down the list to the bottom and click on BLOCK. Repeat of each of the little critters.
The silly little monkeys had sent me photos and one of their addresses. They just insisted that I was "Spencer" playing around. I asked them what their parents would say if they knew that the kids had sent their photos and address to a complete stranger. They didn't believe me. There are none so blind that cannot see.
