Q: .dmg & .zip files won't download in Safari

I'm running OSX 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro and use Safari 5.1.9 for most of my web activites.

I have a problem in that I cannnot get Safar to download either .dmg or .zip files but it will handle .pdf files fine.

My current work around is to use Firefox, but I would realy like ot resolve this issue and get Safari running as it should. I have used Appllejack, Cocktail, and Disc Utility at various times to clean caches and reset permissions, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any solutions to resolve this problem? At this point I'm scratching my head.....

    Thomas ...

Third party cache cleaning utilities are overkill on a Mac and can often cause problems.

Your Mac runs maintenance in the background for you >  Mac OS X: About background maintenance tasks

Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder

Type or copy paste the following:

    ~/Library/Safari/Downloads.plist

Click Go then move the Downloads.plist file to the Trash.

    Now empty the Safari cache.

Back to Safari. Empty the cache by pressing Command + Option + E

Quit and relaunch safari to test.

Back up all data, then uninstall "Speed Download" according to the developer's instructions.

Other system modifications that can cause this kind of problem are "iGetter" and "TVU Player." If none of those is installed, then proceed as below.

From the Safari menu bar, select

    Help Installed Plug-ins

Besides the following, what plugins are listed?

    • iPhotoPhotocast
    • Java
    • QuickTime
    • Shockwave Flash
    • WebKit built-in PDF

    Hello Carolyn,

Thanks for the directions, they are most appreciated.

Here's the thing: when I do as instructed to arrive at the correct file folder the response is "folder can't be found". I searched in the Admin account as well as my own (both have Admin Privileges) and its not turning up at all. Same for a seach of just "Downloads.plist"

I not sure what I'm missing re: a simple seach querey. I would expect it to pop up but such is not the case. Any thoughts?

    Hello Carolyn,

A quick update--Although the file and path didn't show up using either spotlight or the finder as you instructed, when I used Houda Spot it located the file immediately. I was able to quickly navigate to it, delete it, and continue on per your instructions.

Then went and found a recent attempt at a .dmg file that wouldn't download before and it worked perfectly. Many thanks!!

    Thomas
