Q: APN Settings in IOS6

Hi guys,

For those able to sort this out in they're phones, could you please let me know what firmware version you're running? Settings -> About -> Version

For my version (6,1,2 10B146) the Cellular option that jts_2002 mentions is not available...

Ok I am going crazy trying to follow this thread on how to update my APN settings on a factory unlocked Iphone 4s so that I can activate the data settings for my new StratightTalk SIM card. I am running IOS 6.1.3 (10B329) and model # MD241LL/A.   So here is what Straight Talk's support sirte says I need to do to chnage my APN settings:

APN Settings

Updating your APN settings does not guarantee that MMS (Multimedia/Picture Messaging) will work. MMS is dependent upon your phone model’s limitations. If you have an iPhone and you would like to use MMS, you may need further changes in your iPhone in order to update your MMS settings. You may search online for more information.

  Apple iPhone - Internet and MMS (iOS 6 or later) 

1. Go to "Settings," tap "WiFi" and temporarily turn it OFF.
2. Back in "Settings," scroll down to "Messages" and tap to open it. Make sure "MMS" is OFF.
3. Go back to "Settings," tap "General" and then "Cellular." Make sure "Enable 3G" is OFF and "Data Roaming" is ON.
4. Scroll down and tap "Cellular Data Network."
5. Under "Cellular Data Network," enter the information provided in the table on the left for the APN Settings.
6. Click on the HOME key to go back to the main phone screen.
7. Go back to "Settings" one more time, scroll down and tap "Messages" and turn it ON.
8. Press the HOME key and you are set to send and receive MMS!
9. Once you have set it up and tested to see it works, you can re-enable "WiFi," turn OFF "Data Roaming" and turn ON "3G" (or leave it OFF if you're not in a 3G area for AT&T devices on our network).

But as others have noted, when you get to step 3 above, I have no setting that allows me to disable 3G. Under General-->Cellular--> my choices are Cell Data On/Off    Data Roaming On/Off  and then some others that are not relevant... So that's problem #1.

But then I followed the advice of one of the posters here about inserting my old TMobile SIM and getting to the Data settings screen where APN info can be entered. I then swapped my TMobile SIM for the Straight Talk sim at that point, waiting for the "no sim" splash to go away, and then started to enter the APN settings described above...

But then I run into prob #2. The APN setting categories given above by Straight talk do not in anyway correspond to the APN setting categories I had available and which I can now no longer see to report on anyhow.  What a cluster f**k!  Help anyone??

That won't work. Because StraightTalk is using the AT&T network, you will never be able to change the APN settings while connected to their network.

The disable 3G setting is not available because AT&T no longer permits you to manually disable 3G data (they are in the process of shutting down their EDGE network entirely) and since you're actually on the AT&T network, the setting is turned off.

StraightTalk is not a supported GSM carrier for the iPhone. They are a supported CDMA carrier. If you want to use StraightTalk, your best bet is to sell your phone and use the proceeds to purchase a StraightTalk CDMA iPhone.

Here was my work around to partially solve the inability to edit APN settings while StraightTalk (blue) ATT sim is inserted:

0) set wifi to Off

1) powered down iPhone

2) removed StraightTalk / ATT sim (appears connection to ATT  network is the issue preventing APN edit, as indicated above)

3) reinserted old sim (was Tmobile)

4) restarted (says no service, but now the option to select carrier and edit APN settings are visible under iPhone iOS6 General settings)

THEN

5) under Settings Main>Carrier: set cellular network selection from AUTO to OFF

5b) under Settings>General>Cellular: set 3g to OFF, set roaming to OFF

5c) under Settings>General>Cellular>APN: edited settings as described by straight talk... (except could not edit or specify the port settings??)

6) under Settings>General>Cellular: Set cellular Data to off

NEXT

6) wile running, I hot swapped SIM, (ejected the old sim, inserted StraightTalk ATT sim)

7) under Settings>General>Cellular: set Cellular Data to ON (system automatically refreshed)

THEN

8)  data connectivity works, turned 3g on, turned roaming on, etc... (had 3g connection via ATT, Safari works)

9) rebooted/restarted iPhone and the setting still hold, data still works

EXCEPT

10) *** still cannot get MMS to work, to send MMS messages or receive MMS

... will look at this further.

(this was for carrier-unlocked iPhone 3G, iOS6 v 6.1.3 (10B329), stock, not jail broken)

...Not sue if you actually need a inactive sim, of if this would simply work by booting phone without a sim inserted... then inserting the StraightTalk ATT Sim after?

Item's Needed to succeed (patients & good attitude help)

#1 Need your Sim Card if your a bring your own phone customer

#2 Need to call 1-877-222-2355 from a phone that is NOT the one you need to fix.

Call Straight Talk as I did today to get the tech support to walk you through how to fix/set up apn on their new apn network for your phone service to allow MMS & DATA. I have Iphone 3GS 16 GB AT&T that is currently working with the 3G DATA & MMS through Straight Talk.

I had better luck calling them myself this morning to fix/resolve the issue. I had to remove my old apn I had which was easy then enter the url they gave me typing it out to get the new apn using my wifi to do so.

Straight Talk User since 05/2012 with the same phone using AT&T service/3G DATA/MMS.

I hope this helps because I tried to fix it this morning with no luck before calling the tech support myself.
